Job Title: Machine Operator
Reports to: Machine Shop Leadman
Job Type: Hourly, Non-Exempt

SUMMARY Operates machinery to include: lathes, milling machines, boring machines and grinders; machine metallic and nonmetallic workpiece according to specifications, tooling instructions and standard charts applying knowledge of machining methods.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
Operates machinery to include: lathes, milling machines, boring machines and grinders.
Reads blueprint or job order for product specifications, example dimensions and tolerances, tooling instructions, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut and determines sequence of operations.
Selects, positions and secures tool in tool holder (chuck, collet, or too post).
Positions and secures workpiece in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers or fixtures, using clamps and wrenches.
Measure tool and work offsets and adjust as necessary to machine parts to print.
Moves controls to position tool and workpiece in relation to each other.
Sets up fixture or feeding device, starts machine, turns hand wheel to feed tool to workpiece or vice versa, and engages feed. Directs flow of coolant or cutting oil against tool and workpiece.
Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machined workpiece to specifications, using measuring instruments, for example fixed gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
Operates bench grinder, drill presses and hand tools to debur parts.
Upkeep and cleanliness of work areas.
Follow company safety & security guidelines
Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma/GED

DESIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
6 months of machining courses from an accredited institution or equivalent (6 months) experience in a Machine Shop.
Education or experience in blueprint reading

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employee may be required to do the following: climbing into and out of equipment; reaching in all directions, handling and manipulating objects and materials; coordinating the movements of eyes, hands, fingers and feet to operate tools and equipment; lifting up to 50 pounds from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead; carrying objects, tools, equipment, etc.; standing; sitting; walking; pushing; pulling; bending; kneeling; crouching/squatting; crawling; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction. The employee is frequently required to sit while performing the duties of this job (approx. 70%) walk (30%) stand (0%). The employee is expected to lift or move materials (5% of workday)
