Job Overview:

We are seeking are seeking a summer intern in our East Granby, CT facility. The Process Development Engineering  Intern  will be involved in a variety of glass manufacturing processes  which are used for development of specialty optical fibers.  The successful individual will be able to balance a wide variety of responsibilities that includes hands-on and analytical work. Responsibilities would include:

  • Become familiar with optical fiber fabrication techniques used at Coherent, including:
    • Glass fabrication via Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) and fiber production via thermal Draw process
  • Apply theoretical and analytical tools in order to analyze, improve or develop novel fiber manufacturing processes.
  • Use well balanced experimental and theoretical approaches to problem solving and product development. Work with cross-functional technical teams.
  • Participate in process development activities led by the R&D group towards new product introduction activities 

Education/Requirements:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science, such as Materials Science, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other related degree.
  • 100% on-site access
  • Hands-on experience operating equipment and tools
  • Proficiency with standard desktop software (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, driven personality
  • Must work well in teams
