Position Summary
The HMB Machinist is responsible for operating, setting up, and maintaining heavy milling and boring machines—either in-shop or on-site at client locations. This role requires advanced machining skills, the ability to work independently in varied industrial environments, and a willingness to travel frequently for extended periods. The ideal candidate has strong technical knowledge, precision machining experience, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship in demanding conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and maintain horizontal and vertical boring mills, CNC/Manual mills, and other heavy machining equipment.
- Perform precision machining, drilling, facing, and boring operations on large or complex components.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, GD&T, and work instructions.
- Conduct on-site machining for shutdowns, turnarounds, and equipment repairs.
- Maintain tight tolerances and high-quality standards on all machined parts.
- Inspect finished workpieces using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measurement tools.
- Troubleshoot machine issues and perform routine preventative maintenance.
- Ensure strict compliance with safety protocols, site rules, and company standards.
- Document work performed, including measurements, equipment setup, and job progress.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and client personnel on project status.
- Travel to customer facilities, often on short notice, and work in industrial environments such as:- Manufacturing plants- Power generation sites- Oil & gas facilities- Steel mills- Heavy equipment repair centers
Qualifications
Required:
- 3+ years of machining experience (HMB or heavy industrial machining preferred).
- Proficiency with manual and/or CNC mill and bore machines.
- Ability to read technical drawings and apply GD&T principles.
- Strong knowledge of machining speeds, feeds, and tooling.
- Comfortable traveling extensively and working in field conditions.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in industrial environments.
Preferred:
- Experience with large-part machining (mill & bore operations).
- Experience in outage/turnaround/field machining work.
- Certifications in machining, CNC operation, or related fields.
- OSHA, MSHA, TWIC, or other safety certifications.
Work Environment
- Frequent travel to job sites across multiple states.
- Varied shifts depending on project deadlines (days, nights, weekends).
- Industrial environments requiring PPE and adherence to strict safety standards.
