A heat treating company is seeking a hands-on Metallurgist to support heat treatment processes, materials testing, and product quality. This individual will work closely with production, quality, and customers to ensure metal components meet required hardness, mechanical properties, and metallurgical specifications.
The ideal candidate understands how heat treatment affects metal performance and is comfortable working in both a laboratory and a production environment.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, review, and improve heat treatment cycles based on material type, part requirements, and customer specifications.
Provide technical support for processes such as hardening, tempering, annealing, carburizing, and nitriding, as applicable.
Perform and interpret metallurgical testing, including hardness testing, microhardness testing, and microstructure analysis.
Evaluate issues such as cracking, distortion, inconsistent hardness, decarburization, and improper case depth.
Investigate quality concerns, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
Review customer drawings and specifications to establish processing and testing requirements.
Work with furnace operators and production teams to troubleshoot processes and improve consistency.
Prepare metallurgical reports, testing records, and technical documentation.
Support customer discussions, quality audits, and continuous improvement projects.
Help train production and quality personnel on heat treatment practices and metallurgical requirements.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
Experience in commercial heat treating or a manufacturing environment with significant heat treatment operations.
Strong understanding of ferrous metallurgy, steel alloys, and the relationship between heat treatment and material properties.
Experience with metallographic sample preparation, microscopy, and hardness testing.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, material specifications, and customer requirements.
Strong troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
Comfortable working directly with production employees and customers.
