POSITION SUMMARY:  

Without supervision is capable of completing all maintenance functions required to building machinery, mechanical equipment and physical structure.  Offers recommendations and is consulted on improved methods or alternatives.  Instructs other maintenance department personnel about proper procedures.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Education equivalent to vocational or high school which could include short specialty courses.  Approximately three years experience is necessary to develop skills and knowledge to perform proficiently.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Mechanic’s hand tools, calipers, micrometers, machine shop equipment, power fork lift truck, capable of reading and interpreting engineering drawings.  Must have fork lift license.  Must have personal tools as required by supervision.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Production departments, machine shop, tool room and maintenance department personnel.

SUPERVISES:

None.

SUPERVISED BY:

Maintenance Department supervision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Is responsible for making or recommending repairs or parts replacement on equipment following regular mechanical inspections.  Is also consulted on improved methods or alternatives.

2. Assists other maintenance mechanics and works with other personnel on projects requiring coordinated efforts.  This could include moving machinery and installing new and/or existing lines.

3.  Responsible for cleaning work area, machines and equipment and returning unused materials and supplies to storage.

4. Performs maintenance work on a wide variety of items including production lines, punch presses, body makers, injection molding presses, chutes and conveyors, lithograph presses, coaters, ovens, compressors, heating and air conditioning units, and electrical systems. 

5. Must have considerable mechanical ability and be able to properly use and have a complete understanding of the following items:

         a)  mechanic’s tools and equipment

         b)  calipers, gauges and micrometers

         c)  engineering drawings

         d)  fork lift truck

         e)  machine shop equipment

6. Is responsible for monitoring building and equipment worked on for proper safety.  Informs supervision of any unsafe conditions which cannot be corrected.

7.  Position requires pushing, pulling or lifting heavy objects ranging up to approximately 60 pounds.

8.  At discretion of supervisor, may occasionally be called upon to perform other maintenance tasks outside of primary duty and/or hours.  Such could include working late evening or early morning hours or other unscheduled hours to perform necessary repairs or tasks.  May also have to work schedules which are not the normal work week to repair or install equipment, perform preventive maintenance duties, etc.
