Position Summary
The General Laborer supports the daily operations of a municipal transfer station by assisting residents with waste disposal, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and ensuring efficient traffic flow throughout the site. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on work, are comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, and are committed to providing excellent customer service while following established safety procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist residents with the proper disposal of household waste, recyclable materials, and bulk items.
- Educate and guide customers on proper waste separation and recycling procedures.
- Direct vehicle traffic throughout the facility to promote safe and efficient operations.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the transfer station by collecting litter, removing debris, and performing general housekeeping duties.
- Load, unload, move, and organize materials using proper lifting techniques and basic equipment when required.
- Monitor disposal and recycling areas to ensure materials are placed in the appropriate locations and to minimize contamination.
- Follow all safety policies, procedures, and environmental regulations.
- Identify and report safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, or operational concerns to management.
- Assist with additional labor and operational duties as assigned to support the overall success of the transfer station.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in general labor, sanitation, landscaping, construction, or a similar outdoor environment is preferred but not required.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions
- Primarily outdoor work environment.
- Regular exposure to changing weather conditions, dust, noise, odors, and other environmental elements associated with waste and recycling operations.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting throughout the workday.
