Job Overview:

About the Role

The Fleet Safety & Compliance Manager owns safety and DOT regulatory compliance for Kalmbach Trucking’s company fleet of approximately 40 drivers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi, and the safety qualification of contract carriers. The role sets the safety standard, keeps the company audit-ready, and coaches drivers in the field.

This is the department’s one multi-regional role, covering Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi, which is why it reports directly to the Director of Transportation. Reporting outside daily operations also keeps safety decisions separate from the people measured on moving loads.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain complete and current driver qualification files for all company drivers in compliance with FMCSA requirements
  • Administer the DOT drug and alcohol testing program, including random selection, pre-employment, post-accident, and reasonable-suspicion testing, and Clearinghouse queries
  • Monitor hours-of-service and ELD compliance, and address violations with drivers and their supervisor
  • Own CSA performance: monitor BASIC scores, manage DataQs challenges, and lead corrective action
  • Lead accident and incident investigations, determine preventability, and manage claims with insurance partners
  • Manage the Samsara camera program across approximately 50 vehicles: review events, coach drivers, and report trends
  • Own the CDL training program and entry-level driver training (ELDT) compliance, and provide functional direction to the driver trainers
  • Make the safety qualification decision on contract carriers (operating authority, insurance, and safety rating) and maintain MCS-150 filings
  • Develop and maintain the driver handbook and transportation safety policies
  • Conduct field visits, ride-alongs, and driver coaching across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi
  • Partner with HR on driver onboarding and policy, and advise Production on loader and yard safety
  • Report safety performance, including preventable accident rate, CSA standing, audit results, and claims cost

The Right Candidate

  • 5+ years in fleet safety and DOT compliance, including at least 2 years in a lead or management role
  • Thorough knowledge of the FMCSRs, including driver qualification, drug and alcohol testing (Part 382), hours of service, ELD, ELDT, and CSA
  • Experience leading accident investigations and managing claims
  • Experience with video telematics and driver coaching programs; Samsara preferred
  • Credible with professional drivers, with strong written documentation skills
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%
  • CDL and/or Certified Director of Safety (CDS) designation preferred
