Job Overview:

OBJECTIVE / PURPOSE

The Technologist will perform a variety of duties to prepare and produce materials used in the teaching and study of Biology, Genetics and related fields. These duties may include but are not limited to culturing and/or maintaining organisms, assembling components into kits, performing quality checks, maintaining production levels and fulfilling customer orders. 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures timely fulfillment of customer orders with high quality plants, animals, kits and related products. 
  • Maintains the health and quality of living animals and plants by monitoring water quality, feeding regimens, temperature and light cycles.
  • Develops and maintains cultures of living organisms. 
  • Assists manager with developing, implementing and maintaining protocols. 
  • Assists manager in maintaining appropriate inventory levels, planning production and monitoring products for quality to facilitate timely fulfillment of customer orders and limit back-orders.
  • Packages individual components into saleable kits.
  • Plans daily work/production according to schedule and seasonal demand.
  • Collects living organisms from local fields, woods, ponds, and streams as instructed by manager.
  • Interacts with manager, customer service and buyers to obtain or relay information concerning prices, costs, product availability and product information.
  • Effectively communicates with manager regarding culture health/viability, product issues, organism health, maintenance issues, purchasing needs, collectable material needs and safety issues.
  • Assists manager with onboarding, training and cross training within the department.
  • Assists with propagating, planting, pollinating, and harvesting greenhouse plants, corn, tobacco, tomatoes, soybeans and others.
  • Assists in periodic physical inventories.
  • Maintains an organized, clean and safe work environment.
  • Handles hazardous material as necessary following manufacturer recommendations and standard procedures as determined by the EHS department.
  • Participates 2-3 weeks per year in on-call medicinal leech service.
  • The Live Biology Group has seasonal variation in labor needs. As a result, employees are expected to help in other areas as needed. Live Biology is a living materials, laboratory, and manufacturing facility. Employees may be asked to help with packing, work in other living materials areas, with outside field or collecting work, and in various laboratory work areas. Training and PPE will be provided as needed. 
  • Some evening, holiday, and weekend work will be required.

 


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education:  High School Diploma or GED required.  Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a biological science preferred.

 

Experience:  6 to 12 months experience working in a biology related field preferred. Will consider equivalent combination of education and experience.
