Job Description Summary

The Field Service Technician I at Okuma America Corporation is responsible for identifying root cause and corrective action in repairing a variety of Okuma products and installation of high-tech machines when necessary. This position contributes to the accomplishments of the technical services team through resolving complex problems that exceed the scope of distribution's ability.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site troubleshooting and repair support when required
  • Install of new introductory model equipment at customer sites
  • Install retrofits and design improvements at customer sites
  • Diagnose and assist customers with technical issues via phone or email
  • Troubleshoot machine issues in various areas including mechanical alignment, hardware, software, peripheral devices, and automation
  • Keep management informed of status by providing feedback to distribution, end users, and Okuma service management with detailed trip reports
  • Generate technical bulletins and repair manuals
  • Produce technical/how-to manuals strengthening distribution's ability to solve end-user problems without Okuma's direct support
  • Adheres to all company employment policies and safe practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned and explores opportunities to add value

Qualifications


Experience/Training/Education

  • Associates Degree in Electronics or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in CNC controls, servo systems, PLC's, automation, as well as fundamental mechanical background including precision measurement, machine tool theory, hydraulics, and pneumatics
  • 7 years of prior machine tool experience (Okuma preferred)
  • FANUC CNC experience preferred
  • Okuma-Howa product knowledge preferred
  • Prior technical writing experience preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

General:

Technical:

  • Proficient use of precision measuring/diagnostic equipment. Not limited to, but include the use of: laser, ball bar, micrometers, calibers, precision levels, precision indicators, dynamometers, etc.
  • Advanced assembly drawing interpretation
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

  • Basic mechanical/electrical skills
  • Ability to read blueprints, electrical schematics
  • Basic use of hand tools and variety of electrical and mechanical devices, such as precision measuring equipment, multimeters, oscilloscope, cranes, forklifts, etc.
  • Use of basic PC tools, such as Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Strong troubleshooting skills

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as exceptional listening skills
  • Exceptional ability to speak and write effectively in a business environment
  • Exceptional ability to ask necessary questions

Math & Reasoning:

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Strong math skills
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and willingness to adapt to change and take initiative

Physical and Environmental Elements

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for at least 3/4 of the normal work shift, and sit continuously for 1/4 of the normal work shift
  • Ability to lift and carry, push, or pull up to 70 pounds
  • Ability to stoop, crouch and reach
  • Ability to talk or hear continuously
  • Ability to see clearly to do all work-related tasks (clear or corrected vision at 20 inches or less)
  • Finger dexterity is required frequently for over 3/4 of the normal work shift including operating a phone, computer/ electronic equipment, electronic tools, pallet jack, and forklift

Work Environment:

  • Position will often require travel by both car and plane. This role requires spending time at various customer sites, which may be subject to varying work environments
  • Position will often interact with the production/warehouse environment. The employee may work in an open warehouse area where temperatures may be subject to outdoor conditions in terms of cold and heat. There is exposure to various tools and equipment as well as forklift operations and corresponding noise levels
  • A small portion of the position’s functions may be performed in the office environment with standard equipment and moderate noise levels (examples: computers, printers, fax, copiers, light traffic, and phone)

Special Requirements

  • Maintain annual OSHA safety certifications as required by job duties
  • Driving record that is insurable
  • Frequent travel required (75+%)
  • Must live within a commutable distance from the corporate office
