MagTech is currently hiring an Automation Field Service Specialist for a client in the St. Louis, Missouri area. This position will support industrial automation customers throughout Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, providing hands-on troubleshooting, equipment repairs, technical support, and automation service solutions.

We are seeking a mechanically and electrically inclined professional with experience in PLCs, robotics, industrial controls, machine troubleshooting, or automation equipment. Pay

  • Base Salary: $75,000–$80,000 annually, based on experience - OVERTIME Eligible

  • Vehicle Allowance: $500-700/month

  • Mileage Reimbursement: $0.39 per mile

Position Overview

The Automation Field Service Specialist will join an established Automation & Factory Solutions technical services team responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and supporting industrial automation equipment at customer facilities.

This position focuses on resolving complex equipment issues that require specialized technical support beyond routine in-house troubleshooting. The successful candidate will work with a variety of industrial automation technologies, including PLCs, robotic systems, motion controls, electrical control panels, and industrial machinery.

In addition to hands-on technical service, this individual will manage service projects, prepare technical proposals, communicate directly with customers, and identify opportunities for additional automation solutions.

Candidates with backgrounds in industrial maintenance, machine tool service, robotics, automation controls, electrical troubleshooting, or industrial equipment repair are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer facilities throughout Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana to perform automation equipment troubleshooting, repairs, installations, and technical service.

  • Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and automation-related equipment failures.

  • Troubleshoot PLC-controlled machinery, robotic systems, motion control equipment, and industrial control panels.

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and PLC programs.

  • Perform electrical and mechanical troubleshooting to identify equipment malfunctions and implement effective repairs.

  • Assist with PLC programming, system adjustments, and automation controls troubleshooting.

  • Install and assemble aluminum extrusion framing, machine guarding, fencing, and related factory automation components.

  • Manage multiple technical service projects from initial customer requests through proposal development, implementation, and completion.

  • Develop detailed technical service proposals, repair recommendations, and project documentation.

  • Coordinate service activities, scheduling, and customer support requests using internal service management systems.

  • Utilize Zendesk for customer support tickets and service requests and Service-Pro for service coordination and technician deployment.

  • Provide professional on-site technical support while building and maintaining strong customer relationships.

  • Collaborate with internal automation engineers, electrical engineers, technical service personnel, and sales teams.

  • Identify opportunities for additional service offerings, automation improvements, and equipment solutions.

  • Stay current with emerging industrial automation technologies, products, and troubleshooting methods.

  • Participate in ongoing technical training and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience in industrial automation, field service, industrial maintenance, robotics, machine tool service, or a related technical field preferred.

  • Two-year technical degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, Industrial Maintenance, or a related discipline strongly preferred.

  • Experience troubleshooting PLC-controlled equipment, industrial automation systems, robotics, or electrical control systems.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to diagnose and repair complex industrial machinery.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation.

  • Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems, control panels, sensors, motors, and automation components.

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve equipment issues independently.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize service requests effectively.

  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 50–70% depending on business needs.

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate customer needs and project deadlines.

  • Comfortable working independently at customer facilities and collaborating with internal technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Siemens PLCs, drives, controls, or automation products.

  • Background in industrial robotics, robotic troubleshooting, or motion control systems.

  • Experience with PLC programming, modifications, diagnostics, and system integration.

  • Previous experience as an Automation Technician, Field Service Technician, Controls Technician, Industrial Maintenance Technician, Robotics Technician, or Machine Tool Service Technician.

  • Experience installing, servicing, or troubleshooting industrial machinery and automated manufacturing equipment.

  • Familiarity with electrical control panel assembly, wiring, installation, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience working with industrial distributors, automation integrators, or manufacturing service organizations.

  • Experience with technical proposal writing, project management, or customer-facing service coordination.

  • Familiarity with Zendesk, Service-Pro, or similar service management software.
