Field Service Controls Technician (Robotics & Automation)
Location: Remote (Must reside near a major airport)
Travel: Up to 80% Travel (Primarily Southeast U.S.)

Compensation: Up to $100,000 Base Salary + Full Benefits
Position Summary
We are seeking a Field Service Controls Technician to support the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of advanced robotics and automation systems throughout customer facilities across the United States. This role is ideal for a hands-on controls professional who enjoys travel, solving technical challenges, and working directly with customers in manufacturing and industrial environments.
The successful candidate will provide technical expertise related to PLCs, HMIs, robotics, industrial controls, and automated equipment while serving as a key resource during system startups, service calls, upgrades, and preventative maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Travel to customer sites to install, commission, troubleshoot, and repair robotics and automation systems.
- Diagnose and resolve PLC, HMI, electrical controls, and robotic system issues.
- Perform startup and commissioning activities for new automation equipment.
- Support customers with system optimization, programming modifications, and troubleshooting.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
- Conduct preventative maintenance and system health assessments.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to resolve complex technical issues.
- Document service activities, repairs, and recommendations through detailed service reports.
- Provide customer training on equipment operation and maintenance procedures.
- Support emergency service calls and equipment downtime situations as needed.
- Maintain strong customer relationships through professionalism and technical expertise.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of experience troubleshooting industrial automation or controls systems.
- Experience with PLC troubleshooting and programming.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and control drawings.
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Experience working in manufacturing, automation, robotics, or industrial environments.
- Ability to travel up to 80% of the time.
- Must reside within reasonable distance of a major airport.
Preferred
- Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, or Siemens PLCs.
- Robotics experience (Fanuc, ABB, Yaskawa, KUKA, Universal Robots, etc.).
- HMI programming and troubleshooting experience.
- Servo drives, VFDs, and motion control experience.
- Industrial networking experience (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, DeviceNet, etc.).
- Previous field service experience supporting customer sites.
- Associate's Degree or Technical Certification in Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field.
