Field Machinist Co-Op / Apprentice

Location: Hardinsburg, KY

Atlas Machine & Supply, Inc. is seeking motivated, dependable individuals to join our Field Machinist Co-Op / Apprentice Program. This opportunity is designed for students currently enrolled in a school-sponsored co-op program, as well as graduates who have completed the required machining education and are ready to enter a registered apprenticeship.

This role provides hands-on exposure to field machining operations while developing foundational technical skills in real-world industrial environments.

Program Overview

Atlas Machine & Supply’s Field Machinist training pathway offers structured, hands-on experience supporting on-site machining and repair work across a variety of customer locations and industries.

Two Entry Paths

1. Field Machinist Co-Op

  • Designed for high school students currently enrolled in an approved school co-op program

  • Students remain enrolled in school while gaining supervised field experience

  • Upon high school graduation, co-op participants may apply to the Atlas Apprenticeship Program

  • Acceptance into the apprenticeship program is not guaranteed

2. Field Machinist Apprentice

  • Designed for individuals who have already graduated high school

  • Candidates must have completed 100% of required Related Technical Instruction (RTI) through an approved high school, vocational, or trade school machining program prior to entry

  • The Field Crew Apprentice Program does not provide additional RTI hours

Registered Apprenticeship Program Details

  • Includes 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, typically completed over four years

  • This is a state-registered and state-certified apprenticeship program

  • Upon successful completion, apprentices will earn an official Journeyman’s Certificate issued by the state

Job Description

Under supervision and guidance, the Field Machinist Co-Op / Apprentice assists in welding, machining, fabricating, maintaining, and repairing machinery, tools, and equipment. This role involves hands-on work in both field and shop environments while developing technical skills and learning Atlas field machining standards and procedures.

Essential Responsibilities

(Performed with guidance and supervision)

  • Weld, machine, grind, and fabricate materials

  • Modify and adjust metal parts for special projects

  • Perform preventative maintenance on tools, machinery, and equipment

  • Build, repair, fabricate, or machine parts

  • Set up and operate shop machining equipment including lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses

  • Assist with the setup, operation, and teardown of field machining equipment such as portable lathes, boring bars, and flange facers

  • Interpret blueprints and technical drawings

  • Monitor machining processes to ensure precision and accuracy

  • Collaborate with team members on machining strategies for custom or complex parts

  • Perform general machine maintenance including cleaning, lubricating, and part replacement

  • Follow all safety protocols in shop and field environments

  • Travel with experienced machinists to learn Atlas field operations, standards, and procedures

Requirements

Co-Op Candidates

  • Currently enrolled in high school and participating in an approved school co-op program

  • Must meet all school co-op eligibility requirements

Apprentice Candidates

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Completion of 100% of approved machining RTI coursework prior to entry is required

All Candidates

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and technical documentation

  • Effective communication skills

  • Basic math proficiency (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals)

  • Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks including standing, squatting, twisting, and stooping

  • Ability to work in moderate noise levels and changing field environments
