Job Overview:

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Field Metrology Engineer to provide precision measurement, dimensional inspection, and mechanical alignment services at customer sites. This is a highly hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys working in the field, solving mechanical problems, and using advanced measurement technology to identify and correct equipment alignment issues.

You do not need to come from a traditional metrology background. We are open to early-career engineers with 1–2 years of engineering experience who have strong 3D modeling skills, mechanical aptitude, and a willingness to travel and learn specialized metrology equipment and processes.

The work primarily involves precision laser measurement and mechanical alignment of rolls, cylinders, and related equipment used in printing, film, food processing, and conveyor applications. Travel is typically 2–3 day customer engagements, with occasional full-week assignments and multi-night stays.

What You'll Do

  • Operate laser trackers, laser scanners, and other precision metrology equipment to collect dimensional and alignment data.
  • Perform dimensional inspections, equipment alignments, and geometric measurements according to customer and engineering requirements.
  • Diagnose mechanical, dimensional, and alignment issues and support corrective actions.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements to determine measurement and acceptance criteria.
  • Analyze measurement data and prepare detailed technical service reports featuring 3D models, graphical results, findings, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with customers, engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Conduct root cause investigations related to manufacturing, design, installation, and field performance.
  • Provide customer training and technical guidance on measurement methods, metrology equipment, and alignment best practices.
  • Travel approximately 60% to customer sites, including multi-night stays and occasional weekend travel.

What We're Looking For

  • Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • 1–2+ years of engineering experience; early-career candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong 3D modeling experience and the ability to work with 3D models.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with a willingness to be hands-on and turn wrenches when needed.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 60%.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to customers and internal teams.

Preferred Experience

  • Optical or laser alignment experience, including alignment of machinery or equipment.
  • Metrology/inspection software experience such as PolyWorks, SpatialAnalyzer (SA), Verisurf, Metrolog X4, BuildIT Metrology, Geomagic Control X, PC-DMIS, or FARO CAM2.
  • Experience with equipment calibration and certification.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience operating material handling equipment such as forklifts, telehandlers, or overhead cranes.
  • Knowledge of applicable ANSI standards, including GD&T and machinery safety/guarding requirements.
  • Experience working with rolls and cylinders in printing, film, food processing, or conveyor equipment.

Why This Role?

  • Opportunity to build a career in a specialized and highly technical field.
  • Work with advanced laser tracking, scanning, 3D modeling, and precision measurement technology.
  • Hands-on engineering role with significant exposure to complex industrial equipment.
  • Variety of customer sites, equipment, and technical challenges — no two projects are exactly alike.
  • Strong opportunity for an early-career engineer to develop expertise in metrology, mechanical alignment, troubleshooting, and field engineering.
  • Competitive $80,000–$100,000 salary plus overtime, with flexibility based on experience and market.
  • Travel expenses are supported, including company-provided per diem, flights, rental vehicles, and mileage reimbursement.

If you're a mechanically minded engineer who enjoys hands-on problem solving, working with 3D models, and traveling to solve challenging equipment issues, this could be an excellent opportunity to build a specialized engineering career.

You should be proficient in:

  • Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
  • Mechanical Troubleshooting Skills
  • Troubleshooting Industrial Automation Equipment
  • Pneumatics Troubleshooting
  • Field Service Readiness
  • Industrial Electrical Systems
  • Electrical Schematic Reading
  • Equipment Installation & Wiring
  • Blueprint Reading
