Job Overview:

Planning and Design Engineer I

**Location: **Houston, TX

Work Arrangement: Onsite – 4 days in office

**Schedule: **Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–3:00 PM CST

**Position Summary

**

We are looking for an experienced Telecommunications Planning and Design Engineer with strong fiber optic experience. This position will support the planning, design, surveying, and documentation of telecom and fiber-optic networks.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with fiber routes, network designs, maps, plats, property records, utility easements, surveys, and engineering documentation.

**Strong telecom-specific fiber experience is required.

**

**Key Responsibilities

**

  • Plan and design fiber-optic and telecommunications networks.
  • Develop and review fiber routes, cable paths, maps, and network designs.
  • Review plats, deeds, public utility easements, and right-of-way information.
  • Research county assessor and public-record websites to identify property and easement information.
  • Perform serviceability reviews and support point-to-point (P2P) routing requests.
  • Support fiber surveys and field walkout activities.
  • Review completed survey information and perform quality-control checks.
  • Identify missing or incorrect information and coordinate necessary corrections.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate engineering and survey documentation.
  • Support projects involving Fiber, Metro Ethernet, Cell Backhaul, Managed Wave, Dark Fiber, Coax, residential, commercial, and SMB services.
  • Track assigned tasks and ensure work is completed within established SLA requirements.
  • Monitor outstanding tasks and proactively address issues that could affect project schedules.
  • Communicate with internal teams, contractors, business partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in team meetings, training, and business updates.
  • Identify process or technical issues and communicate them to management.
  • Provide technical support and solutions when needed.

**Required Skills & Experience

**

  • Strong telecommunications fiber experience.
  • Experience with fiber planning and design.
  • Knowledge of fiber-optic network architecture and routing.
  • Understanding of fiber documentation and engineering records.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, schematics, and utility easements.
  • Knowledge of cable routing and telecom support structures.
  • Experience with fiber surveys, walkouts, or field survey activities.
  • Experience performing quality control on engineering or survey documentation.
  • Ability to research property information and public records.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

**Survey & Walkout Responsibilities

**

The engineer will also help manage the survey/walkout process by:

  • Tracking survey deadlines and deliverables.
  • Reviewing completed surveys for accuracy and quality.
  • Approving completed survey information.
  • Identifying required permit activities.
  • Assigning design and permit-related tasks.
  • Monitoring outstanding and hold tasks.
  • Updating estimates when additional work is required.
  • Following up on delayed activities.
  • Ensuring survey and design work meets quality and SLA requirements.

**Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a telecommunications fiber planning/design professional who can independently:

  • Plan and review fiber routes.
  • Understand fiber network architecture.
  • Read plats, maps, and easements.
  • Research property and utility information.
  • Review field survey and walkout information.
  • Perform engineering quality control.
  • Manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively with business partners and internal teams.

**Important Requirement

**

**This is not an entry-level position. Candidates must have strong, hands-on telecommunications fiber experience, particularly in planning, design, routing, surveying, or related engineering activities.
