Job Overview:

JOB TITLE: Plant Maintenance Worker

Starting Wage:  15.49 per hour

GRADE: VII

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision; works from drawings, sketches, and/or oral instructions; fabricates, constructs, installs, makes alterations, repairs and maintains machinery and equipment of all kinds, using electric and gas welding equipment, etc.  Responsible for the preventative maintenance lubrication schedule for all factory equipment; does other work as directed by supervisor.  Required:  Certified forklift driver and have a driver’s license.  Must work all available hours that are offered and wherever assigned.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT: Various types of hand tools and special factory tools; various shop equipment and machines.  Maintenance worker must provide own hand (work) tools.

MATERIALS: Various factory material.

SOURCE & NATURE OF SUPERVISION: General from Maintenance Supervisor or in absence of him/her direct from Assistant General Manager or line supervisor for breakdown.

DIRECTION EXERCISED: Directs work of helpers assigned to work on various jobs.

SAFETY: Performs all functions in a safe manner.  All HACCP & food safety rules are known & followed.

 

WORK PERFORMED:

  • Plans work from drawings, sketches and written or oral instructions; directs work when assistance is required.
  • Makes all types of repairs and adjustments to keep machinery and equipment in operating condition.
  • Inspects and lubricates all machinery, bearing, etc.; reports defective parts.
  • Disassembles, overhauls and repairs packing equipment such as T-dump, reefers, sizer, conveyors, pumps, compressors and puree equipment such as T-dump, slicer, mixers, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and reassembles same.
  • Repairs pipeline systems, fixtures, apparatus, and accessories for the conveyance and distribution of steam, air, water, and other fluids under pressure; tests systems for leaks.
  • Builds, installs, maintains, and repairs steel structures and heavy plant machinery.
  • Works as “rigger” when moving heavy equipment, structural steel heavy machinery. Uses steel cables, block and tackle, jacks.
  • Uses chipping hammers, drills, grinders when working with structural steel; uses oxy-acetylene cutting torch for cutting plates and beams; and uses electrical arc welding.
  • Does work as needed of a general nature on buildings and grounds such as painting, nailing boards, repairing building sheet metal, change lamps.
  • Checks out forklifts and trucks for simple problems such as starting problems, oil leaks, broken chains, and informs supervisor in charge if outside service is required.
  • Must be able to perform night shifts and/or rotate shifts.
  • Does other work as directed by supervisor.
