Job Description: The Fabricator / Sanitary Welder / Machinist is responsible for the fabrication, installation, repair, and modification of stainless steel sanitary process equipment used in food production environments. This role requires advanced TIG welding skills on thin-wall stainless tubing, familiarity with sanitary design principles, and the ability to machine custom parts using manual milling and drilling equipment. The position plays a critical role in ensuring equipment reliability, food safety compliance, minimizing production downtime, and R&D improvements. | |||||
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Fabrication & Welding • Perform TIG welding on stainless steel sanitary tubing and components (304/316). • Fabricate and repair piping systems, frames, guards, chutes, hoppers, drip trays, brackets, and process equipment. • Maintain compliance with 3-A, USDA, FDA, and plant sanitary standards (no crevices, full penetration welds, finishes). • Cut, fit, tack, weld, and polish stainless assemblies. Machining / Milling • Operate manual milling machines, drill presses, band saws, and grinders to fabricate custom parts. • Machine bushings, spacers, brackets, shafts, guards, wear plates, and retrofit components. • Interpret engineering drawings and create shop sketches when documentation is incomplete. Safety & Sanitation • Follow lock-out / tag-out, hot-work permitting, confined-space, and food-safety procedures. • Maintain clean welding practices in production areas (wipe-downs, debris control, post-weld sanitation).

Required
• 3+ years of experience in stainless steel TIG welding in a sanitary or food-grade environment. • Demonstrated ability to produce full-penetration, cosmetic-quality welds. • Experience fabricating from prints, sketches, or verbal direction. • Hands-on experience with manual milling machines and shop equipment. • Ability to read blueprints, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings. • Familiar with GMP, food safety, and sanitary fabrication standards.
Preferred
• AWS TIG welding certification (or equivalent). • Experience in food processing, dairy, beverage, or pharmaceutical manufacturing. • Knowledge of mechanical systems: pumps, VFD-driven equipment, conveyors, evaporators, dryers. • Basic PLC / instrumentation familiarity is a plus. | |||||
Working Conditions: Physical Requirements • Ability to lift 50+ lbs. • Stand, kneel, climb, and work in tight or elevated spaces. • Work around heat, welding fumes, chemicals, and wet environments.
