Job Title: Fabrication Technician                              


 

Job Summary:

The Fabrication Technician fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal products. Work may involve setting up and operating fabricating machines to cut, bend, and produce sheet metal parts. Shaping metal over anvils, blocks or hammer forms using hand tools. The fab technician also restores damaged prototype Class A panels to original or custom conditions. Key duties include inspecting, repairing, or replacing prototype body panels, hammering out dents, welding, metal finishing and sanding Class A panels while adhering to safety standards. This role requires precision in metalwork, alignment, and finishing, often involving, at a high level, custom fabrication or structural repair.  

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plans, layouts, fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal parts, equipment, and products.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, or product specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products
  • Quality checks and safety
  • Laying out and marking dimensions and reference lines on material, using scribers, dividers, squares, and rulers, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques to develop and trace patterns of product or parts or using templates.
  • Set up and operation of fabricating machines, such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers, to cut, bend, block and form, or straighten materials. Shapes metal material over anvil, block, or hammer forms using hand tools.
  • Trims, files, grinds, deburrs, buffs, and smooths surfaces, using hand tools and portable power tools.
  • Inspects assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, scales, dial indicators, gauges, and micrometers.
  • Verifies conformance of workpiece to specifications, using square, ruler, and measuring tape.
  • Plex (ERP System for Time tracking and Inventory Control)
  • Must be able to qualify stamped parts to 3mm check fixtures.
  • Set up and run a press brake and metal muncher to perform low tonnage forming and installation of clinch hardware. 
  • Inspect body panels for structural damage and develop repair plans. Ability to fit prototype structural and Class A stampings.
  • Remove damage from all exterior Class A panels (Fenders, Quarters, Doors, Hoods etc.) hammer out dents, weld new metal or panels.
  • Metal Finish and Sanding Class A surfaces to a paint ready finish.
  • Align and fit structural and exterior panels to a nominal check-aid/fixture. Able to manually hem flanges using a hem-buck tool (doors, tailgates, hoods etc.)
  • Use pneumatic tools (angle grinder, air hammer, DA/Orbital, drill etc.) and welding equipment (MIG/TIG/Resistance Spot). 

 

 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

 

  • Proficiency in welding, fabrication, and paint prepping.
  • High precision in panel condition and panel finish.
  • Ability to work in noisy environment, lift heavy parts, and work long hours.
  • Diagnostic skills to determine the best method to repair new stampings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

 

 

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

ASE Certification Preferred 

Associates degree, Certification, or equivalent combination of work and education.

Minimum 5 year experience 

 

 

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Working in a dirty work environment.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
