Description

Owen Equipment Company, an Owen Company, is looking for an experienced Equipment Buyer to join our growing team at our corporate office in Vancouver, Washington.

We are one of the largest Vactor and Elgin dealers in the United States and sell, service and rent sewer cleaners, vacuum excavators, street sweepers and related accessories. We are the largest supplier in the Western U.S. of replacement brushes and brooms for sweeping equipment. We maintain five full-service locations in Portland, Oregon; Kent, Washington; Spokane, Washington; Fairfield, California; and Salt Lake City, Utah and our customer base consists of the largest municipalities and contractors in the Western U.S. Our equipment is critical to keeping our streets and sewer systems clean, locating buried infrastructure during construction projects, and helping to build and maintain our electrical grid.

Salary Range:  $85,000 - $105,000 annually plus 15% Bonus Potential

Position Summary:

The Equipment Buyer will be responsible for sourcing and purchasing new and used equipment to support our retail sales efforts as well as growing and maintaining our rental fleet. This role is critical in ensuring we have the right equipment available to meet customer demand, while maintaining strong supplier relationships and optimizing inventory investments.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Source and purchase new and used Vactor, Elgin, and Truvac equipment to meet customer demand and inventory targets.
  • Manage procurement for the company’s rental fleet, including identifying equipment needs, ordering new units, and coordinating fleet rotation and disposal.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with OEMs, wholesale channels, auction platforms, leasing companies, and other dealers.
  • Evaluate market trends, inventory levels, and customer demand to make informed purchasing decisions.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery timelines with suppliers and vendors.
  • Maintain accurate records of all purchases and associated documentation in the company’s ERP or inventory system.
  • Coordinate with the Sales and Service Departments to ensure purchased equipment meets specification requirements and is ready for resale or rent.
  • Monitor and report on equipment utilization rates, rental ROI, and inventory turnover to support strategic planning.
  • Assist in setting pricing for used equipment acquisitions and trade-ins based on current market conditions.
  • Stay current on manufacturer programs, promotions, and product changes.

 

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in equipment purchasing, fleet management, or a related role in the heavy equipment, construction, or municipal sector.
  • Strong knowledge of Vactor, Elgin, and Truvac product lines or similar vacuum, street sweeper, or hydro excavation equipment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with equipment auction platforms, resale markets, and rental fleet lifecycle management.
  • Excellent negotiation, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with inventory management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to inspect equipment or attend industry events.
  • High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain, or a technical field is a plus.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment with occasional travel to job sites, vendor facilities, or auction locations.
  • Ability to inspect and assess heavy equipment in various conditions.
  • Typical work hours are Monday–Friday, with flexibility based on business needs.
