General Purpose and Scope of Position:

The Data Architect is responsible for visualizing and designing the organization’s data management framework. This framework describes the processes used to plan, specify, enable, create, acquire, maintain, use, archive, retrieve, control, and purge data. This role is responsible for defining and documenting data standards and principles, the technical architecture of the enterprise data, including the physical components and their functionality. The data architect will partner closely with the enterprise architecture and integration team to align data flows and diagrams to systems and business capabilities.

Key Skills and Abilities Include:

  • 5-7+ years experience
  • Degree in business management, computer science, computer engineering, system analysis or a related field of study 
  • Proven experience defining data flows, i.e., which parts of the organization generate data, which require data to function, how data flows are managed, and how data changes in transition
  • Proven experience in defining reference architecture that others can follow to create and improve data systems
  • Proven experience defining the data architecture framework, standards, and principles, including modeling, metadata, security, master, and reference data
  • Experience with tools such as MS Visio, Erwin, LeanIX, Iserver

Key Personal Attributes Include:

  • Expert knowledge of data management, data integration, and database development techniques
  • Ability to relate architectural decisions and recommendations to business needs
  • Ability to communicate across all levels of the organization and work with diverse project teams 

Specific Responsibilities and Key Deliverables Include:

  • Document the data design of solutions for large projects and programs; through expert knowledge translate high-level business requirements into data models
  • Simplify the existing data architecture, identifying reusable services and cost-saving opportunities in line with the policies and standards of the group 
  • Provide clear, continuous, and consistent data architecture leadership at a detailed level within the project 
  • Drive project knowledge back to the enterprise data model and ensure that it evolves correctly 
  • Align the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of complex data systems and solutions with the enterprise data strategy
  • Work with the business intelligence and integration teams to develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models to support data analysis 
  • Create and maintain current and target state data architectures 
  • Define and manage standards, guidelines, and processes to ensure data quality set by data governance is applied
  • Ensure technology solutions are in alignment with data architecture principles and target state 
  • Work with IT teams, business analysts, and data analytics teams to understand data consumers’ needs and develop solutions 
  • Participate in the assessment of emerging technologies for data management, storage, and analytics
