Shaw Industries Inc. is seeking a dynamic and visionary Automation Director to lead the design, implementation, and execution of a global automation program and organization that drives business strategy and delivers impactful business results.

This is an exciting opportunity to establish a global automation program, develop an enterprise-level roadmap, governance and strategy, and collaborate across business unit divisions and organizations to achieve excellence. The selected candidate will manage a global community of practice for automation, drive technology roadmaps in collaboration with business leaders, and support all manufacturing, distribution and logistics sites in strategic development and program execution. This role will provide leadership for automation strategy and implementation for the enterprise. Leveraging existing technology shared services, this role will lead the discovery and creation of automated solutions, automation software support systems, automation integration, and technical education resources, ensuring alignment with existing Cloud, Network, Data and Cyber Security services. The right candidate should approach this role within mind to “Direct and implement Enterprise-wide standards, while allowing local autonomy”.

Scope of Work:

  • Automation Strategy for the Enterprise

  • Enterprise Automation Execution – manufacturing, distribution and logistics.

  • Establish Automation Community of Practice across the enterprise

  • Support existing automation and control systems in Operations.

  • Technical Education for automation and maintenance skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Program Development: Create and align a global automation program and strategy with senior manufacturing, supply chain and technology leadership, standardizing and deploying it across all Shaw business divisions. Strong strategic thinking abilities to assess the organization's needs, identify automation opportunities, and develop a comprehensive automation strategy aligned with business objectives. This involves understanding industry trends, evaluating

  • Emerging technologies, and mapping out long-term automation roadmaps including budgets. Working collaboratively with Enterprise partners to identify gaps and propose high value productivity automation solutions.

  • Leadership / Capability Building: Establish the Automation group's capabilities, requirements, staffing, and initiate projects to meet business needs. Strong leadership skills are crucial for driving automation initiatives. The ability to inspire and motivate teams, foster collaboration, and build strong relationships with stakeholders across different departments is essential. The director should effectively communicate the benefits of automation, gain buy-in from key decision-makers, and lead by example. Function as the champion for the Automation Community of Practice, promote engagement and knowledge sharing.

  • Change Management: Automation initiatives often involve significant organizational change. The director should possess excellent change management skills to assess the impact of automation on employees, facilitate change communication, and provide necessary training and support to help the workforce adapt to new automated processes.

  • Business Acumen: Understanding the organization's business processes, goals, and challenges is essential for this role. This includes aligning automation initiatives with overall business strategies, identifying areas for process improvement, and demonstrating how automation can drive efficiency, cost savings, and enhanced customer experiences.

  • Continuous Learning: The field of automation is rapidly evolving. Successful directors should have a passion for continuous learning, staying abreast of the latest automation trends, attending industry conferences and webinars, and networking with other automation professionals. This ensures that the director can bring fresh ideas and innovative approaches to automation strategies and systems.

  • Standardization and Governance: Working closely with Enterprise leaders, owner will be responsible for directing the creation of automation standards and governance for existing automation activities and new automation projects.

  • Supplier Partnerships: Conduct technical and cultural evaluations to ensure partnerships with optimal suppliers, including consultants, robotic integrators, and equipment suppliers. Ensure efficient discovery and execution of solutions via external partners/integrators where appropriate.

  • Project Prioritization and Program Promotion: Develop processes to assess the criticality of automation projects, facilitate integration into prioritization frameworks and provide guidelines for capital valuations. Advocate for the Automation program by communicating key components, including: Business and site-level Technology Roadmaps, Automation Assessments, Site Automation Evaluations and Improvements

  • Project Management: The ability to effectively manage automation projects from initiation to completion is essential. This includes defining project scope, creating implementation plans, allocating resources, managing timelines, and coordinating cross-functional teams for Capital projects planning and execution (Design Reviews, Construction, Acceptance Tests,

  • Commissioning, Safety Reviews, etc.). Strong project management skills are required to ensure successful automation system implementations.

  • Technology Advancement: Drive adoption of new automation technologies within Shaw.

  • Plan and Execute Integration Activities: The Director is responsible for a detailed integration plan that outlines the specific activities and tasks required for a successful integration.

  • Measure and Track Integration Success: The Director establishes key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the success of the integration. They track and analyze integration outcomes, assess the achievement of synergy targets, and adjust as needed to ensure desired results.

  • Ensure Compliance: The Director ensures that all integration activities comply with legal and regulatory requirements. They work closely with legal and compliance teams to address any legal or regulatory issues that may arise during the integration process.

  • Provide Post-Integration Support: After the initial integration is complete, the Director may provide post-integration support to address any ongoing integration challenges. They monitor the post-integration performance, identify areas for improvement, and provide recommendations for further optimization.

  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with automation projects, including data security, compliance, and operational risks. Ensure adherence to relevant regulations, policies, and industry standards throughout the automation lifecycle.

Requirements:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s in Engineering required; Master’s degree in Engineering preferred

  • Professional Experience: People and Technical program leadership experience with a minimum of 10 years in manufacturing environment (preferred), focusing on program management and automation technology expertise.

  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated success in Automation processes and large-scale rollouts. Experience with mechanical and/or electrical fabrication technology for automation equipment integration.

  • Automated Process Familiarity and Passion: Working knowledge of automated process equipment, including robotics, barcoding, and inspection systems (vision, scanning). PLC/Robotic programming, electrical design, and network architecture. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software. Passion and experience in Automation Ideation

  • Proven performance in strategic planning, project execution, and leadership.

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement Methodologies

  • Change Management: Experience with Management of Change (MOC), including technical reviews of site and business MOC processes.

  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to influence at all organizational levels and demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in a diverse team environment with respectful collaboration is essential.

  • Problem-Solving Orientation: Highly motivated problem solver capable of enterprise level strategic and tactical thinking.

  • Travel Requirement: Willingness to travel to manufacturing and distribution sites, with a minimum travel commitment of xx%.
