This position reports to Structural Integrity Manager within the Airframe Integrity Group and is responsible for planning, managing and technical performance covering a diverse area of responsibility. These areas include method and process development for the Airframe Integrity Group, the review and approval of the material design values and allowable for all efforts, and the review and approval of repairs provided in support of Material Review Board along with Field actions. 

The Strength Manager may also serve as a technical expert in the area of stress, fatigue, and damage tolerance analysis, material allowable determination, airframe qualification, and testing for coupons, components and full-scale aircraft.   Manages all phases of assigned engineering project(s) from inception through completion. Participates with technical staff, program managers and executive management to develop and implement current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, quality, business and financial objectives for the unit. May also contribute to the development of annual and long-term objectives for the Division/Group. Objectives are typically accomplished through subordinate engineering team leaders however individual efforts based on the Strength Manager’s areas of expertise will be required. Will be responsible for decisions that impact the product where erroneous recommendations could cause schedule delays and allocation of additional resources.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Lead activities for engineering project(s) including planning and managing technical performance to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives are attained.
  • Proven prior experience in several of the following areas:
    • Development of Metallic and Composite Structural Analysis Techniques
    • Experience with GA-ASI Current and Legacy air vehicles.
    • Experience in metallic and composite fatigue and damage tolerance principles.
    • Experience in planning, direction, coordinating and execution of large component/full scale static and fatigue tests of both metallic and composite
    • Experience in the development and execution of structural validation testing including coupon and component testing in an organized Building Block
      Program.
    • Experience with manufacturing principles for composite components and the basic benefits, costs and risks associated with these techniques.
    • Expertise in the development of composite material allowables using the techniques in CMH-17 and other references.
    • Familiarity with DOD, Civilian, and other regulatory documents such as JSSG 2006, STANAG 4671, FAR-23, FAR-25, DEF STANs for example.
    • Familiarity with the maturation of technology for structural integrity applications, along with risk management.
    • Extensive experience with the principles of Material Review Board actions.
  • Implement current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, quality, business, and financial objectives for the engineering unit and may also participate in the development of Group/Company objectives.
  • Participate in and coordinate the establishment of design concepts, criteria, and engineering efforts for product research, development, testing, and integration.
  • Interact internally with engineering team and/or with suppliers, vendors or customers to share information and for basic problem resolution. May act as primary contact for engineering activities.
  • May participate in the preparation of proposals, business plans, proposal work statements and specifications, operating budgets and financial terms/conditions of contract(s).
  • Ensure technical leadership and excellence is maintained by participating in the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of the required management, professional, and technical talent.
  • Lead progress review sessions to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance.
  • Identify engineering issues and provide leadership in developing solutions such as re-allocation of resources or modifying contract specifications.
  • May participate in the development of new business opportunities and expansion of existing business opportunities.
  • Manage the development of and ensure the security of the unit’s proprietary technology, and maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Responsible for ensuring all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations are observed wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Responsible for ensuring work is accomplished in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in engineering or a related technical field as well as nine or more years of progressively complex engineering experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in the application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
  • Must possess the ability to resolve management and technical problems.
  • Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
  • Customer focused, must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • A Professional Engineering License, and original work(s) published in professional engineering journals are desirable.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance is required.
