Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Engineering, the Engineering Group Leader ensures the completion of projects within budget and schedule constraints. Meets customer quality standards, specifications and delivery requirements as well as industry’s safety and quality standards, in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Leads a team of engineers to complete structural design projects within time, quality and cost constraints.
  • In collaboration with the Engineering Manager, allocates project resources including:
    1. Engineering staff
    2. Platform Design Support Staff
    3. Equipment (hardware, software, tools, etc.)
    4. Required space for team and equipment
  • Prioritizes, schedules and delegates work assignments to Engineers and/or Platform Design Support staff assigned to the project.  
  • Works with Project Managers and Master Scheduler to develop project schedules and timetables.  
  • Reviews the completed work of engineers and/or Platform Design Support staff assigned to the project for adherence to customer specifications and technical proficiency.  Approves the work before submittal to the deliverables
  • Completes the necessary project documentation which may include the following:
    1. Structural plans
    2. Structural calculations
    3. Project deliverables and support documents
  • Oversees, coordinates and participates in the Customer coordination and deliverable process for Customer systems, ensuring adherence to procedure and process requirements.
  • May act as the primary liaison and interface with the customers, overseeing project reviews and coordinating the project.  
  • Assist the Director of Engineering with:
    1. Performance evaluations
    2. Project Engineers development
    3. Platform Design Support staff development
    4. Metrics definition
    5. Status reporting mechanism
    6. Timely reporting of project risks (i.e.: schedules, cost overruns, etc.)
  • Acts as a technical resource. Mentors Engineers and Platform Design Support staff to address and resolve inquiries and problems.  Act as a mentor to other employees who are working to become team leaders.  Addresses and resolves the day-to-day needs and concerns of team members
  • Leads or participates on cross functional teams to ensure the continuous, on-going improvement of processes, methods, productivity and quality, while reducing costs.
  • Travels to customer sites as needed (approximately 15%)
  • Maintains technical competency and remains current on new technology and trends in the industry.
  • Ensures the completion of all required status reports, metrics, project libraries, paperwork, records, documentation, etc.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in structural or civil engineering or architectural sciences is required
  • Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering exam is required
  • 1-3 years of experience using AutoCAD 2016 or Higher 
  • 1-2 years of experience leading an engineering team is required
  • 3D modeling software knowledge required
  • 2-5 years of applicable experience in material handling equipment product and process design preferred
  • Professional Engineering license is preferred

Other Skills

  • Ability to work independently when solving problems, but using good judgment in seeking guidance where appropriate.
  • Ability to communicate with other internal departments: Drafting, Sales and Project Management
  • Ability to understand information such as bills of material, drawings, design data and design standards
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as technical specifications, professional journals, and blueprints. Ability to write reports and documentation. Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, customers and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
