Job Summary

General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer as part of the Engineering and Projects team within the Energy Group. This position will be part of a team for the design, development, and fabrication of components and systems for Magnetic and Inertial Fusion devices.

This role focuses on the mechanical design of components and systems.  Under general direction with limited review, this position is responsible for applying innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems within mechanical design and systems integration.  Initiates the planning of engineering projects and develops innovative designs to meet project goals.  Independently performs difficult engineering work, communicates results to staff, and may represent the organization as the technical contact on small contracts or single component projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support operation of engineering systems and documents problems.
  • Devise new approaches to resolve unusual or complex engineering problems through mechanical design methodologies.
  • Leads the development and optimization of complex mechanical assemblies and detailed technical drawings.
  • Troubleshoots conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
  • Provides documentation and gives technical presentations as required.
  • May represent the organization as technical contact on small contracts or single component projects.
  • Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
  • Apply GD&T, perform tolerance stack‑up analyses, and use basic mechanical analysis and sizing (including FBDs) to ensure designs meet functional, fit, form and manufacturability requirements.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline with engineering experience as follows; six or more years experience with a Bachelor’s, four or more years with a Master’s, two or more years with a PhD.  Equivalent experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory and the ability to broadly apply those concepts to a wide variety of engineering problems.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Creo, or other mechanical CAD packages.
  • Ability to effectively organize, schedule, and coordinate work to meet established timetables with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to lead a team of moderately experienced engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Professional Engineering License and published work in a professional journal are desirable.
  • Ability to perform first‑order hand calculations to support sizing of structural and mechanical components (e.g., stress, deflection, factors of safety) prior to detailed analysis.
  • Comfortable interpreting engineering requirements and applying basic statics, strength of materials, and mechanical principles to develop and refine designs.
  • Hands‑on experience applying Model‑Based Definition (MBD) methodology in a production design environment, including creation and use of fully annotated 3D models as the primary product definition.
