Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Electrical Test Engineer to assist in planning and executing testing at various site locations. This position will interact with technical staff and report to test and department managers. The tests that the individual will be required to support range from production and factory acceptance tests, system and component level requirements verification tests combined with operational tests, lifecycle tests, environmental and electromagnetic interference/compatibility tests.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Applies technical knowledge to develop concepts and plans for test systems and programs
  • Applies technical knowledge to analyze, investigate and resolve Test engineering problems across many systems including pulse power, DC motors and motor drives, Data Acquisition and Test Instrumentation, as well as PCBA and modules aboard small satellites
  • Translate system or product requirements into verification tests and instructions
  • Participate in establishing design concepts, criteria and engineering efforts for testing
  • Create and update Test procedures and assist sub-contractors in design and execution of various electronics tests
  • Lead efforts to install and set-up instrumentation in San Diego and at remote sites
  • Conduct testing and verification as directed by the Test Lead
  • Independently execute and direct system and subsystem test operations
  • Assist with technical direction to staff engineers, technicians, and subcontractors
  • Troubleshoot test systems, equipment and test procedures as needed
  • Analyze test data and prepare collected data for creation of test reports
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Responsible for adhering to all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company
  • Responsible for ensuring work is accomplished in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices
  • Travel up to 25% to the test sites located in, but not limited to, Colorado, Southern California, Alabama, and Mississippi
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree.  May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects
  • Must be able to work extended hours and travel as needed.
  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • Must be a US citizen
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Working knowledge of space or missile systems with experience conducting environmental tests while operating these types of systems
  • Hands on experience testing power electronic equipment
  • Experience in writing technical documents such as test procedures and test reports
  • Experience in communicating technical information to peers and to customers.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading or guiding a team independently.
  • Working knowledge of Power Electronics in the area of power conditioning and storage and experience conducting tests in a development and production environment.
  • Experience in MIL-STD 461 testing
  • Have a desire to work in a fast-paced testing environment
