We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer as part of the Engineering and Projects team within the Energy Group. This position will be part of a team for the design, development, and fabrication of components and systems for Magnetic and Inertial Fusion devices.
This role focuses on the mechanical design of components and systems. Under general supervision with limited review, this position is responsible for determining and developing effective approaches for resolving a wide range of difficult engineering problems.
Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and anticipated results. Work is reviewed at milestones or at completion. This role documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff and makes technical presentations as required. May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may provide direction to less experienced professional staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Evaluate and interpret needs and problems to develop effective approaches to resolving engineering issues.
- Develop detailed CAD models and technical drawings for mechanical components and assemblies.
- Apply GD&T, perform tolerance stack‑up analyses to ensure form, fit, function and manufacturability of engineered systems.
- Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs systems by utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles.
- Obtains and analyzes test data to validate design performance and safety.
- Develop appropriate documentation of findings and implemented solutions and gives technical presentations as required.
- Directs the activity of designers and technicians and may direct less experienced engineering staff.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s, Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Four or more years of engineering experience with a Bachelor’s, two or more years experience with a Master’s. Equivalent experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
- Complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory.
- Experience with SolidWorks, Creo, or other mechanical CAD packages.
- Ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately; ability to organize, schedule, and coordinate work to meet established timetables.
- Excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Professional Engineering License is desirable.
- Demonstrated familiarity with basic mechanical analysis and component sizing, including use of free body diagrams (FBDs) to evaluate loads, reactions, and internal forces.
- Experience collaborating with engineers to validate design concepts, review assumptions, and iterate based on analysis results.
