SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for the technical oversight, optimization, and validation of all manual labor stages, including anodize preparation, surface texturing, and mechanical assembly. This role focuses on engineering sustainable manual workflows, addressing quality failures (COPQ), and ensuring parts are correctly handled and fixtured to eliminate quality rejections while utilizing Six Sigma methodologies to drive process improvements and efficient flow.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Conduct daily shop floor Gemba walks to identify unsafe conditions and partner with supervisors to implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Provide engineering support during incident investigations, documenting root causes and implementing permanent mitigation measures
  • Validate manual workstations for ergonomic compliance and proper use of PPE, ensuring processes meet OSHA and internal safety standards
  • Collaborate directly with operators, inspectors, and quality engineering to confirm product conformance at each manual process step
  • Audit manual operations for adherence to approved work instructions and process controls; update documentation when gaps are identified
  • Support nonconformance investigations by analyzing trends, verifying defect mechanisms, and engineering improvements that prevent recurrence
  • Actively identify, document, and attend to Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) problems
  • Validate fixturing and handling techniques on the shop floor to eliminate damage-related COPQ events
  • Monitor WIP levels across all manual process stages and identify engineering actions required to eliminate bottlenecks
  • Provide rapid-response engineering support to keep production flowing when issues arise, such as fixture failures, unclear instructions, or quality holds
  • Partner with Production Leads to develop takt-aligned workflows and improve station-to-station material movement
  • Evaluate cycle time variation in manual operations and implement improvements that stabilize throughput and support on-time delivery
  • Review part geometries and design custom fixtures, racking aids, or manual templates that improve process repeatability and part protection using SolidWorks
  • Interpret technical manuals, facility blueprints, and schematic drawings to create detailed work instructions for manual operations
  • Ensure all manual process areas and equipment meet company safety policies, environmental regulations, and OSHA guidelines

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Education Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or an equivalent combination of technical education and related experience
  • Experience Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing engineering or process leadership role
  • Methodology Proven experience in Six Sigma methodologies (DMAIC) and the implementation of 6S and flow optimization
  • Software Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) for tracking and reporting; familiarity with SolidWorks for design collaboration is preferred
  • Technical Knowledge Deep understanding of manual finishing techniques, mechanical assembly, and process optimization
  • Communication Exceptional written and verbal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with shop floor personnel, vendors, and upper management

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Mobility Sitting for long periods of time, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, or crouching
  • Dexterity Use hands to finger, handle, or feel parts; reach with hands and arms
  • Strength Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
  • Visual Close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to differentiate shades and colors to identify defects
  • Atmosphere Fast-paced environment with low noise levels in an office and occasional moderate noise on the shop floor
  • Hazards Working near moving mechanical parts and industrial equipment
  • Safety Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, shoes, and ear protection
