The Opportunity
This position works out of our Little Canada/St. Paul, MN in the electrophysiology division.
In Abbott’s Electrophysiology (EP) business, we’re advancing the treatment of heart disease through breakthrough medical technologies in atrial fibrillation, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.
As the Engineer I, Electrical, at our Little Canada/St. Paul, MN location, will be a member of the Hardware Research and Development organization, involved in designing electromechanical medical devices in Abbott’s Electrophysiology medical device division. In this fast growing, highly visible group, you will develops and execute tests to assess EP products, manage and maintain the ECAD library, and support design development through creating parts and components.
You will use your detail-oriented engineering skills to apply engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solutions for technical problems. Other work may include prototyping, electrical characterization and verification, PCB development, coding for test equipment, schematic symbol/footprint creation, and lab maintenance for our commercialized products.
What You’ll Work On
- Design schematics and layout for prototyping
- Create test plans, collecting test data, analyze results, write engineering reports
- Develop test code for test fixtures
- Support lab infrastructure and PCB database library – ECAD maintenance and management
- Create and review schematic symbols and component footprints
- Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.
- Resolve and/or facilitate the resolution of complex technical problems including identifying root causes to prevent re- occurrence.
- Validate equipment and processes as required.
- Ensures compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO design controls.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Biomedical engineering, or other related Engineering field
- 0-2 years’ experience in electrical design, systems, or related work experience with a strong understanding of specified functional area)
- Solid fundamental understanding of analog and digital circuits
- Hands on experience in lab testing and debug of electrical circuits using standard bench equipment
- Knowledge of schematic and layout PCB tools
- Soldering and de soldering techniques and ability to assemble prototype boards
- Strong verbal and written communication with good organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Ability to take initiative and work independently
- Strong ability to work effectively within a cross-functional product development team.
- Ability to work within a quality management system utilizing design controls.
- Ability to solve a variety of complex problems of diverse scope.
- Software knowledge preferably with C or C++
- Proficient with Altium schematic entry tool or equivalent
- Proficient with Arduino boards or work with uC development boards
- Exposure to Spice simulations
- Prior experience with high reliability products and familiarity with quality systems is a plus
- RF experience is a plus
- Medical Device experience
- Ability to travel approximately 5%, including internationally.
