BAE Systems is seeking a Software Engineer to support the Space Systems facility in Manassas, VA. Our engineering team develops and produces a wide array of space products, from single-board radiation hardened computers to complete space payloads, for commercial, military, and space communities. The company specializes in radiation-hardened electronics and space applications, including application-specific integrated circuits, memories, and single-board computers. Our single-board computer products are flying on over 250 different spacecraft, including three generations of Mars rovers and Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) communication satellites.
The Software Engineer supports development and delivery of high-quality, embedded software and associated test infrastructure. This position supports a portfolio of Space programs, from ASICs to payload boxes. Their expertise in identifying and rectifying defects in both products and processes also contributes significantly to meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality, reliable products to our customers.
Job Summary: You will work as a part of a team comprised of software, systems, electrical, computer, and mechanical engineers to design and develop software products to support Space hardware systems:
  • Write and test boot up and board support software for Space products.
  • Perform full software life cycle development including requirements, architecture, design, code, test, integration, documentation, and support.
  • Follow software engineering process including creation of all necessary process artifacts.
  • Coordinate software development activities, ensuring alignment with program goals, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Interface with internal stakeholders and customers, presenting technical solutions and shaping future capabilities.
  • Contribute to software and business area roadmap discussions.
  • Contribute to annual Capital and IRAD planning discussions.
  • Participate in customer technical interchange meetings and product support as necessary.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (systems, hardware, and test engineering) to solve complex integration challenges.
  • Support the troubleshooting of Circuit Card Assemblies (CCA's), modules, and sub-assemblies, working directly with hardware and design engineering personnel as required.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation, sharing best practices in design, coding, testing, documentation.

Required Skills and Education

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of experience developing software for embedded systems.
  • Proficient in the software development life cycle and experience with C/C++ development.
  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems such as VxWorks, embedded Linux, and device tree development.
  • Experience working with bring-up, integration, test, and debug of electronic hardware systems.
  • Experience developing documentation to capture software design details as well as test plans and procedures.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment while completing tasks in an unsupervised and self-directed fashion.

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Experience with Space (or DoD related) programs.
  • Experience in reviewing and utilizing technical content such as hardware drawings and electrical specifications.
  • Experience with GenAI tools in support of software development.
  • Familiarity with System Engineering concepts such as Model Based Engineering and design tools such as MagicDraw.
  • Understanding of and experience with deployment and operation of applications on Linux systems.
  • Familiarity with ASIC design and test methodology, including radiation qualification testing.
