Job Description
The Supplier Development Engineer is responsible for cultivating supplier partnerships with major machine shops while developing supplier execution performance toward achieving BAE Systems expectations to meet quality, delivery and cost goals.
Responsibilities:
- Improve delivery, quality & cost performance of suppliers through development of robust improvement plans.
- Manage supplier improvement plans through supplier interaction/visits to monitor and verify progress and provide technical support.
- Provide leadership during investigations of major problems and or special projects focusing on developing strong partnerships with suppliers.
- Function as liaison between suppliers and internal Programs teams including Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement to resolve supplier performance issues and to provide technical support.
- Analyze delivery metrics to identify specific systemic performance gaps, root cause and potential solutions.
- Lead technical engagement opportunities with suppliers and internal technical teams to promote producible product during specific Programs in the design phase.
- Recommend technical changes to Machining and Brazing Producibility Index templates and other technical documents to support new product launch success.
- Analyze drawings of machined parts to determine complexity and supplier selection criteria
- Collaborate with Procurement and Program teams to strategically source parts matched with supplier competencies, capacity and strategies.
- Participate in Long Term Supplier Agreements to provide technical support, supplier knowledge, negotiation input and alignment of business awards to support commodity strategies.
- Develop and approve process controls to control critical characteristics.
- Recommend technical product improvements to reduce risk and potential defect opportunities.
- Review and assess supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems. Provide feedback as appropriate on manufacturing methods and technologies. Demonstrate innovation, technical excellence, attention to detail, self-direction, & courage.
- Perform various supplier assessments including: Technical, Capacity, Manufacturing Readiness and specific functional assessments.
- Lead Producibility efforts for improved design for manufacturing in conjunction with Design Engineering and suppliers.
- Navigate various systems to review data and set up Approved Suppliers in system collection plans
Because this role involves a combination of independent and collaborative work, this position can be conducted 100% remotely.

Required Skills and Education
- Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years work experience or equivalent experience
- Experience in developing major machine shops from a technical and performance perspective
- Experience in navigating multiple databases to pull data for analysis and set up Approved Supplier collection plans
- Hands-on machine shop experience a plus
- Must be a self-starter
- Must be assertive and goal driven
Preferred Skills and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field from an accredited university and/or
- Minimum of 4 years of experience with manufacturing processes related to machined components/structures, or machining processes, and similar technologies.
- Experience with manufacturing and inspection of raw materials, machined parts and fabricated components.
- Experience working in a machine shop environment.
- Experience with quality management systems standards (AS9100 and ISO 9001)
- Demonstrated knowledge of production / manufacturing improvement processes i.e. PPAP, APQP
- Technical capabilities including knowledge of 2D blueprints and 3D models/model based engineering
- Disciplined approach to problem solving
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and report writing
- Knowledge of lean concepts
- Assertiveness skills and motivated self- starter a must
- Experience with sharing information and influencing others (strong written and verbal communication skills, able to liaise cross functionally, internally and externally, make presentations to team members and management)
- Knowledge of statistical techniques and methods (like design of experiments, Six Sigma, etc.)
- Experience with MRP or ERP systems
