Location: Indianapolis, In | Schedule: Mon to Fri; 9am to 5pm | Payrate: $76/hour

Are you passionate about embedded systems and wireless technologies? PDS Tech Commercial is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to help develop next-generation connected HVAC products that are smarter, more secure, and more efficient.

In this role, you'll design, develop, and optimize embedded firmware for advanced HVAC systems, collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver reliable, high-performance solutions from concept through production.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for ARM Cortex-M-based systems.

  • Develop bare-metal and RTOS-based firmware using Embedded C.

  • Implement and optimize drivers for peripherals including UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, DMA, timers, and watchdogs.

  • Design bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms, and low-power embedded applications.

  • Develop and support wireless communication solutions, including Z-Wave, mesh networking, and proprietary sub-GHz protocols.

  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to integrate firmware with embedded hardware platforms.

  • Debug, troubleshoot, and validate embedded systems using J-Link, SWD, GDB, and other development tools.

  • Contribute to secure firmware design, OTA updates, and product reliability.

  • Participate in code reviews, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

  • Strong experience developing embedded software in Embedded C

  • Experience with ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers and bare-metal and/or RTOS-based firmware

  • Proficiency with interrupt-driven architectures and embedded peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, DMA, timers, watchdogs)

  • Experience developing bootloaders, firmware update systems, and low-power embedded applications

  • Experience debugging embedded systems using J-Link, SWD, GDB, or similar tools

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work independently and collaborate with hardware engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Silicon Labs EFR32, Gecko SDK, Simplicity Studio, or Silicon Labs wireless stack APIs

  • Hands-on experience with Z-Wave, proprietary sub-GHz protocols, mesh networking, or low-power wireless sensor networks

  • Knowledge of secure boot, firmware signing, encrypted OTA updates, secure pairing, and embedded security best practices

  • Experience with modular firmware architecture, state-machine design, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing

  • Familiarity with RF concepts, including antenna performance, RF optimization, EMC/EMI troubleshooting, and wireless certification

  • Experience supporting smart home, HVAC, industrial, or connected IoT products
