DESCRIPTION:
The Electron Beam Welding (EBW) Operator is responsible for setting up and calibrating equipment, executing welding processes, ensuring quality compliance, maintaining accurate documentation, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Perform pre-weld inspection, assembly, and fixture parts.
- Comprehend weld drawings, WPS’s, and PQR’s.
- Interpret and follow welding schedules, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Prepare and configure EBW machine per WPS/PQR.
- Load and secure workpieces in the vacuum chamber.
- Perform vacuum pump-down and ensure proper chamber pressure.
- Set beam parameters (voltage, current, focus, and travel speed) per WPS/PQR parameters.
- Monitor beam alignment and focus during welding.
- Adjust machine settings to maintain weld quality.
- Inspect welds both DT and NDT methods (Sectioned Samples, Visual and MSLT).
- Document weld parameters from DAQ and inspection results for traceability.
- Perform routine maintenance on EBW equipment (filament replacement, vacuum system checks, vacuum pump oil change, lubrication).
- Diagnose and resolve issues with beam stability, vacuum leaks, or power supply.
- Keep accurate maintenance logs.
- Comply with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, Company policy and accepted safe work practices.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:
- CWI Certification - preferred.
- AWS or equivalent welding certification - preferred
- Specialized EBW training certification – preferred
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma, GED equivalent, or Technical School.
- Prior experience in precision welding or electron beam processes.
- Experience with quality inspection methods (NDT, visual, dimensional checks).
- CNC basic programming knowledge - G/M code proficiency for EBW operation, equipment specific.
- Technical or vocational training in welding, machining, or manufacturing processes.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Knowledge of blueprint reading and welding symbols.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Semiconductor industry or other manufacturing experience preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS WHILE PERFORMING THE JOB:
- Standing and sitting for extended periods of time - walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, or bending to the floor; use hands to finger, handle or feel parts and materials, reach with hands and arms and overhead, communicate and hear instructions and equipment sounds.
- Lifting and/or moving items up to 40 pounds.
- Close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to differentiate shades and color to identify coating defects.
- Near acuity or accommodation required for reading instrumentation and documentation, dial and digital gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of coating operations.
- Fine hand dexterity and ability to work in controlled environments and cleanrooms.
- Follow strict safety protocols for high-voltage and vacuum systems.
- Wear appropriate PPE and radiation monitoring badges.
- Comply with FMI and Regulatory Standards for hazardous materials and equipment.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB:
- Regularly exposed to moving equipment, mechanical parts, ovens, and risk of burns.
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
- High noise levels from operating machines.
- The employee will be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to hazardous materials commonly used in a manufacturing environment (i.e., safety glasses and shoes, gloves, hearing protection, mask, etc.).
- Approximately 90% of the shop floor environment.
- Physical hazards while working near moving equipment and mechanical parts.
