Job Overview:

Job Summary

The Electrical Engineer I is a production support–focused engineering position supporting the manufacture of switchgear, switchboards, and power distribution equipment. Embedded with the test team, this position serves as the engineering technical lead for electrical testing and functional verification of switchgear lineups and provides day-to-day engineering support to the wiring and electrical assembly areas. Working closely with Production, Quality, and Design Engineering, the Electrical Engineer I resolves technical issues on the production floor, improves test methods and documentation, and helps ensure products are built and tested to drawings, customer requirements, and applicable UL standards. This position is for an individual with a degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology and hands-on experience testing and troubleshooting electrical equipment.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as the engineering technical lead for electrical test of switchgear and switchboard lineups, including dielectric (hi-pot), insulation resistance, continuity/point-to-point, and functional/operational testing
  • Develop, and improve test procedures, test data sheets, and test reports; ensure test results are complete, accurate, and traceable
  • Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, and control circuit drawings to support testing and troubleshooting, including CT/VT secondary circuits, breaker auxiliary and control circuits, metering, and relaying
  • Troubleshoot wiring, component, and functional failures found during test; identify root cause and drive corrective action with the wiring, assembly, and design teams
  • Provide engineering support to the wiring and electrical assembly areas on drawing interpretation, wire sizing and routing, terminations, and workmanship standards
  • Review drawings and bills of material for manufacturability and testability; provide feedback to Design Engineering and initiate drawing change requests as needed
  • Support first-article builds and new product introductions from a production and test standpoint
  • Support UL 891 and UL 508A compliance on the production floor, including component substitution reviews, labeling, and workmanship requirements; support UL field inspections
  • Establish and enforce safe electrical work practices in the test area in accordance with NFPA 70E and company safety policies, including test area setup, barriers, PPE, and energization procedures
  • Train and mentor test technicians and wiring personnel on test methods, drawing interpretation, and quality requirements
  • Participate in nonconformance reviews and continuous improvement activities to reduce rework, test failures, and cycle time

Job Requirements

  • 0–3 years of experience in electrical manufacturing, testing, or production engineering; experience with switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, or industrial control panels preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, and mechanical assembly drawings
  • Hands-on proficiency with electrical test equipment such as digital multimeters, hi-pot/dielectric testers, insulation resistance testers, and clamp meters; experience with breaker or relay test sets a plus
  • Working knowledge of low-voltage power distribution equipment and components, including circuit breakers, CTs/VTs, control power transformers, metering, and relays
  • Familiarity with UL 891, UL 508A, the NEC, and NFPA 70E preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD Electrical or similar electrical CAD software a plus
