Summary

The Electrical Controls Technician applies electrical and electronic theory and related knowledge to design, build, repair, calibrate, and modify electrical components, circuitry, control systems, and machinery.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

This job includes but is not limited to the following:

• Design, program and troubleshoot PLC, Industrial Control systems and relay control circuits to include panel layouts, wiring diagrams and interfaces. Perform testing, start-up, and troubleshooting of PLC and Industrial Control systems.
• Work on AC and DC systems up to 480 volts.
• Design motor controls involving full-voltage starters, VFD’s, and soft-starts.
• Provide technical support on motor control systems, PLC’s, PLC programming for Maintenance Tech’s and electricians for implementation on plant equipment.
• Provide in-house training documents; prepare reports, flow diagrams and charts.
• Prepare specifications and standard operating instructions for processes and equipment.
• May use computer-assisted engineering and design software to perform engineering tasks and create CAD drawings of project wiring diagrams, panel layouts, etc.
• Assist in designing and maintaining appropriate electrical systems to internal customers through the use of busways, transformers, and load centers.
• Manage capital improvement projects such as recommendation installation of oil-filled transformers including the associated Switch-Gears and power feeders.
• Assist in defining and updating the Electrical Safe Work Practices Program for the facility, for compliance to the NFPA 70E standard.
• Maintain 24900 high voltage system
• Manage the cost and time constraints of projects ensuring that all aspects of an operation or process meet specified regulations is critical.

Physical Demands

• Must be capable of lifting 50lbs, reach and lift moderately heavy parts – up to several hundred repetitions per shift
• Ability to stand on one’s feet, bend, and / or twist a minimum of 8 hours per day
• Must be able to ascend / descend stairs
• Must be able to sit, walk, climb, stoop and kneel

Qualifications

• It is preferred that the candidate have a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology although candidates with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology combined with real word application in a manufacturing environment will be considered.
• Experience in the field of die casting, machining and assembly is a plus.
• Must have an emphasis in Industrial Controls, integrated circuits in industry, digital and analog circuits, and programming.
• Must possess the ability to develop designs that require innovation and ingenuity.
• Should be proficient in specialized topics such as robotics, optical communications and designing logic circuit for machines.
• Ability to be project-orientated and work on a number of projects, all at various stages, at any given time. Work will be performed with minimal supervision.
