The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer serves as the primary driver of the organization’s safety and environmental compliance strategy by designing, deploying, and continuously improving EHS policies, procedures, and performance systems. This position partners closely with site leadership to proactively identify hazards, reduce operational risk, strengthen regulatory compliance, and support capital and process initiatives that improve workplace conditions. The role also supports the Company’s commitment to sustainability by promoting responsible environmental practices and encouraging the use of renewable or lower-impact materials wherever feasible within operations.
Build, maintain, and oversee facility-wide EHS programs, including but not limited to: Confined Space Entry, Emergency Response, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout (Lock-Tag-Verify), Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklift), Hoist and Crane Certification, Fall Protection, Incident and Near-Miss Investigation, Mobile Equipment Safety, PPE Management, Ergonomic Assessments, Injury Response and Case Management, Safe Work Permits, Waste Reduction and Disposal, OSHA/MIOSHA compliance requirements, and contractor safety controls
Lead the design and enhancement of safety training systems, ensuring training is effective, consistent, and understood across all employee groups
Improve site readiness through risk-reduction initiatives and measurable EHS performance improvements
Support onboarding and orientation activities for new hires, contractors, and external service providers in coordination with department leadership
Maintain a strong floor presence and serve as an accessible, visible safety resource for production, maintenance, and contractor work teams
Provide expert-level guidance on safety and environmental regulations, permits, audits, and compliance interpretation
Apply structured risk assessment tools to anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazards, and coordinate corrective actions to close gaps and strengthen controls
Chair and lead the Safety Committee, driving engagement and aligning the team to facility safety expectations and operational priorities
Ensure the facility maintains risk-based improvement plans, with practical action items and KPI-driven monitoring to validate progress
Coach employees and supervisors at all levels to reinforce accountability, ownership, and a safety-first culture
Address workplace health and safety questions from employees with professionalism and urgency
Track, analyze, and report EHS metrics, incident data, audit outcomes, and project progress to leadership as part of ongoing performance management
Execute responsibilities in alignment with Scherdel’s quality management expectations and applicable customer quality requirements
Coordinate and sustain the processes required to meet Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) and Environmental Management System (EMS) expectations, including ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 compliance
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related technical discipline
Minimum of five (5) years of EHS experience, including at least three (3) years supporting a manufacturing or industrial operation
Preferred:
ASP, CSP, CIH, or comparable professional certification
OSHA Training Institute coursework (501, 503, 511, or equivalent)
Practical working knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards
Strong working knowledge of EHS legal requirements, regulatory compliance standards, and reporting obligations
Demonstrated capability in ergonomics, risk management, incident investigations, audit execution, continuous improvement systems, and preventive safety practices
Experience developing and delivering training to employees and leaders across multiple levels of the organization
Background in environmental permitting and submission of regulatory reports to local and state agencies (air, water, and related environmental categories)
