Delaware Online/The News Journal, part of the USA Today Network, is seeking a reporter who can transform the traditional education beat into one that focuses on enterprise stories that draw loyal readers, especially families with school-aged children.

Sure, the Education reporter will need to keep up on education news and trends, but this beat will focus on a broader variety of topics for people with children from daycare through college. Stories will include a mixture of education, politics, health, finance, entertainment, sports and more. There are hundreds of decisions for parents in this time period – from vaccinations to planning and paying for college and everything in between. This job would cross various areas of the newsroom, so the ability to communicate and work well with others is vital. This is not a feature writing position, it is an enterprise and watchdog job.

We are looking for someone who can find and tell good stories that make an impact in the community and with our readers. We have built a culture of enterprise and watchdog journalism in the place of traditional meeting coverage and reactive fast takes. If this is the kind of journalism you want to do, get in touch. If you want to learn more about the position (including everything from hours to pay) before you apply, email News Director Phil Freedman at [email protected]

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

1. Your resume – one to two pages.

2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.

3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
