Setting up and operating CNC EDMs – both wire and sinker.
Machines run on an XY plane and then a rotary axis.
Responsible for two machines at a time.
Setup entails replacing the spool/wire, setting up electrodes, and understanding the importance and testing of deionized water.
No built-in sensing or intelligence systems are in these machines.
Wire tension is set during the set up but it’s infrequent that wire is changed and that’s not done by FlexTrades technicians.
Metals: nearly all 440 grade stainless steel as well as some beryllium copper and other stainless grades.
Bars range from 4mm in diameter to 1” in diameter.
Parts: components for electro-hydraulic pressure & flow control valves. All parts have been cut on the CNC Swiss machines and then heat treated prior to coming to this area.
These are REALLY small. The smallest part has a diameter of .080” (80 thousandths of an inch) and are only 1/8” long. Holes are very small too at .004” diameters (4 thousandths of an inch).
The parts are VERY delicate, and the tools used to machine these are very delicate as well. Even coolant on the drilling tool could break it.
Quality: parts are basically all rectangular in nature so there isn’t a lot of inspection but at times a Tool Maker’s Scope will be used to find the edges of a slot created by the EDM machine.
