Job Description
BAE Systems, one of the world’s largest defense contractors, is hiring a Designer in Facility Engineering to help us conceptualize and execute modernization and sustainment of energetic manufacturing processes at Holston Army Ammunition Plant. In this position, you will be supporting the Ordnance Systems, Inc. (OSI) Business at our Kingsport, TN facility. You could be successful in this role with a background in a mechanical, electrical or civil / structural design. This position will be work onsite on a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.
As a Designer in our Facilities, Process Continuity and Sustainment (PCS) Team, you will:
- Be responsible for engineering and technical tasks to support design and construction of projects to increase, modernize, and sustain chemical production capacity
- Be responsible for interpreting redline markups into precise technical drawings.
- Assist engineers in technical tasks to support design and construction of various projects.
- Include planning, design, analysis, and engineering inputs into the construction and maintenance of chemical plant facilities.
- Assist in generating, checking, and managing design packages through collaboration with the design team. These packages will include drawings, specifications and diagrams that clearly define the construction requirements. These packages are issued to general contractors for construction on large scale modernization projects as well as smaller plant maintenance type upgrades.
- Work alongside engineers you will provide technical oversight during the actual field installation and commissioning of equipment.
- Communicate and work with a multi-discipline (civil/structural, chemical, mechanical, and electrical) engineering team to perform plant and project engineering.
- Collaborate with engineering team in the design and construction of chemical manufacturing facilities that involve the use of acids, bases, and solvents to produce energetic materials.
- Assist engineers to select construction materials and methods, write specifications, control cost, and manage work to meet project schedules.
- Drafting of Process Chemical (PFDs/PIDs) or Electrical (Single Lines) Drawings from redline markups.
- Create drawings used for construction, installation and procurement of mechanical equipment.
- Walkdown project sites with engineer and take field measurements of equipment and piping systems.
- Assist in the creation of detailed project proposals, scopes of work and estimates.
- Assist engineering to ensure that work is performed in accordance with plans, specifications, and good construction practices and within cost during the execution phase.
- Assist in executing commissioning plans as needed.
- Maintain documentation as required.
- Consider safety in all aspects of work and design.
- This role requires regular presence in a manufacturing or fabrication environment. The incumbent must be able to access and safely navigate production areas which may include climbing, kneeling, stooping, and working in confined spaces. Must also be able to comply with all requirements including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company policy.

Required Skills and Education
- Associate’s degree in technology or drafting from an accredited university and 4 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. We may consider candidates with fewer years experience for a more junior position or additional experience for a more senior position.
- Technical competence regarding the broad application of engineering principles to the development of new capabilities and/or solutions to customers’ challenging modernization problems.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
- Be self-motivated, have a high level of attention to detail, and able to work in a team environment.
- Design experience in at least one of these areas:
- Civil / Structural Design
- Process Design
- Mechanical / Machine Design / Pumps and Piping System Design
- Electrical / Power Systems / Control Systems Design
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and Electrical Drawings.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
- Working knowledge of design software for efficient production of engineering work (AutoCAD,
Plant 3D, Inventor, Revit, etc.). - Ability to interface effectively with site operations and maintenance teams.

Preferred Skills and Education
- Experience with Adobe, Bluebeam, and / or Navisworks
- Experience in the chemical process industry (2+ years), or 5+ years other relevant experience.
- Experience with PFD’s and P&ID’s
- Experience with Electrical Schematics
- Ability to perform 3D design / modeling using Inventor, Revit etc.
- Knowledge of Tank and Vessel Design / Construction
