Position: Driver Mechanic
Location: Sterling Heights, MI
Type: Full-time
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive and road-test tracked and wheeled vehicles under a variety of conditions, including adverse road conditions, various load scenarios, and inclement weather at multiple test and field sites.
- Perform below-the-hook lifting and rigging operations in accordance with industry standards and safety guidelines.
- Remove, disassemble, repair, modify, assemble, adapt, adjust, and reinstall vehicle components and systems, including engines, transmissions, suspension, electrical systems, automotive structures, fire control, and test equipment.
- Fabricate and assemble experimental/prototype parts, test fixtures, and tools from engineering drawings, blueprints, or sketches.
- Fabricate electrical harnesses, wires, and test panels for experimental, prototype, and production vehicles.
- Recommend changes to drawings or sketches during the fabrication process.
- Utilize hand, bench, and machine tools, as well as welding equipment.
- Perform and support highly skilled mechanical and testing functions with limited supervision.
- Follow all safety directives and contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
Qualifications Sought:
- Ability to work overtime, and 2nd or 3rd shift as needed.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally for periods of up to 30 days or more (occasional/extended).
- Must meet Anthropometric Size Requirements (ASR) for vehicle entry and operation.
- Must be able to comply with all Health & Safety requirements (Respirator, Eye Exam, Hearing Conservation).
- Must meet physical qualifications to perform duties.
- Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
- Must be able to obtain Abrams and Stryker driver licenses.
- Must be willing and able to work in a team-based environment.
- Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment.
- Must be able to obtain crane, forklift, powered industrial vehicle, and other necessary safety training and licenses.
Desired (Not Required) Experience:
- Welding experience and/or welding certifications.
- Sheet metal fabrication skills and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
- Electrical harness fabrication and electrical panel assembly experience.
- Previous experience operating military vehicles, heavy equipment, and/or vehicles equipped with cranes and/or welding equipment.
- Experience with overhead crane operations, including below-the-hook lifting and rigging of large and heavy components (e.g., vehicle hulls, turrets).
- Rigging certification or formal rigging training.
