The Dye Mold Maker is responsible for building, repairing, modifying, and maintaining precision molds, dies, fixtures, and related tooling used in manufacturing operations. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications. The Mold Maker works closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure tooling meets dimensional and production requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Build, assemble, repair, and modify molds, dies, and related tooling according to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment, including mills, lathes, grinders, EDM equipment, and other precision machinery.
- Read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, GD&T, sketches, and work instructions.
- Perform precision measurements using micrometers, calipers, gauges, height gauges, and other inspection equipment.
- Troubleshoot mold and die issues and make necessary adjustments to improve part quality and production efficiency.
- Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on molds and tooling.
- Fit, finish, polish, and hand-work components to achieve required dimensions and surface finishes.
- Verify completed tooling meets dimensional, functional, and quality requirements.
- Work with engineers and production personnel to identify tooling problems and recommend improvements.
- Maintain accurate records of tooling repairs, modifications, and maintenance activities.
- Follow established safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives involving tooling, manufacturing processes, quality, and productivity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical school or apprenticeship in Tool & Die, Mold Making, Machining, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience as a
Mold Maker, Tool & Die Maker, Die Maker, or Precision Machinist.
- Strong knowledge of machining and mold-making processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience using precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and tooling problems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CNC mills, CNC lathes, EDM, surface grinders, and/or jig grinders.
- Experience with injection molds, die-casting molds, stamping dies, or other production tooling.
- Experience with CAD/CAM software.
- Experience making tooling to tight tolerances.
- Formal Tool & Die or Mold Making apprenticeship.
- Knowledge of , metal stamping, or other manufacturing processes, depending on the type of tooling used.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and work for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move tooling, materials, and components as required.
- Ability to use hand tools and precision measuring equipment.
- Ability to work around machining equipment, lubricants, coolants, and manufacturing environments.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
