Job Description

The Role

The Die Engineer at the Global Artisan Innovation Center (GAIC) provides technical leadership for stamping, die design, and die tryout activities in a pre‑production environment. This role supports early vehicle development by defining stamping strategies, guiding tooling development, and ensuring high‑quality sheet metal parts for integration and prototype vehicle builds.

Operating within GAIC’s flexible Machining, Tooling, and Stamping (MTS) shop, this role bridges Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Program Management, and Skilled Trades to deliver tooling solutions that are not suited for high‑volume plants. The position plays a critical role in influencing early design decisions, manufacturing feasibility, timing, and cost.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as the technical authority for stamping, die design, and die tryout within Pre‑Production Operations.
  • Develop and refine die and stamping strategies early in vehicle development to support integration and prototype builds.
  • Guide tooling and process development to ensure high‑quality sheet metal parts that meet manufacturing requirements.
  • Define die timing, content, and key inputs to support accurate program timing and spend forecasts.
  • Collaborate with Die Program Planners, DREs, Manufacturing Integration, Stamping Architects, and Program Teams to develop manufacturing strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with die and stamping standards, including process capability, timing, content, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Participate in early‑phase vehicle development forums to represent stamping and die considerations (e.g., pull‑ahead tooling, integration vehicle timing).
  • Review and align program timing with GVDP templates; identify and communicate stamping risks and constraints.
  • Contribute stamping and die input to GVDP template development and manufacturing planning studies.
  • Evaluate alternative stamping strategies and develop business‑case assessments.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of professional experience working in manufacturing engineering environments
  • Extensive knowledge of stamping tooling design, die construction, and sheet‑metal manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with NX and Teamcenter (or equivalent tool) for tooling and product data management.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, part measurement systems, and tooling prints.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and gage design/function.
  • Experience defining die timing, tooling content, and manufacturing requirements in early vehicle programs.
  • Knowledge of automotive manufacturing processes and pre‑production tooling environments.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience coaching and guiding hourly Skilled Trades (Die Designers, Metal Model Makers) on the shop floor.
  • Ability to work effectively with UAW skilled‑trades employees in a pre‑production setting.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capability for complex manufacturing challenges.
  • Ability to prioritize work and operate with limited day‑to‑day direction.
  • Effective communication skills for presenting strategies and technical content to senior ME Body leadership.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
