Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Design Engineering Manager to join our growing Engineering department in McGregor or Houston, TX. In this key role, you will lead and mentor a team of engineers and designers, overseeing the design and engineering of our diverse product portfolio. You will play a critical part in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. You will also be responsible for leveraging your project management experience to ensure projects are executed efficiently in an engineer-to-order environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Management:
    • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of engineers and designers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
    • Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and support the professional development of team members.
    • Allocate and manage department resources (personnel, equipment, budget) to optimize productivity.
  • Engineering & Design:
    • Oversee all engineering activities, ensuring compliance with industry standards (ASME, NFPA, API, TEMA) and internal processes.
    • Perform ASME & API calculations using specialized software (Compress, AME Tank).
    • Review and approve fabrication drawings and calculations for code compliance and accuracy.
    • Prepare comprehensive design packages, including calculations, inspection travelers, weld maps, and bills of materials.
    • Stay current with industry specifications and code changes to ensure department compliance.
  • Project Management:
    • Leverage your project management expertise to collaborate with Sales, Project Management, and Operations, ensuring efficient and effective project execution.
    • Manage the design process for custom, engineer-to-order projects, ensuring all requirements and specifications are met.
    • Estimate material and labor costs for manufacturing projects, contributing to accurate and competitive proposals.
    • Provide technical expertise and guidance to the shop floor and customers, resolving engineering-related issues.
    • Manage vendor RFQs for material costs and ensure timely updates to customer pricing.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department, enhancing efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
    • Identify and implement improvements in engineering and manufacturing processes.
    • Stay abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
    • Design for Six Sigma – DFM/A, FMEA, FEA and Problem-Solving Tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant engineering experience.
    • At least 3 years of project management experience, ideally in an engineer-to-order environment.
    • Proven leadership experience, preferably in a supervisory role within an engineering department.
    • Strong understanding of welding practices (MIG/TIG/SAW/Laser/Plasma) and ASME codes.
    • 3D CAD Proficient in Inventor or other 3D design tools (CREO, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Skills:
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask effectively.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and data analysis tools.
    • Knowledge of materials/properties in design of equipment/products.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
