Mueller Water Products is currently seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Smart Water Infrastructure engineering team. This position is eligible to our Hybrid work policy, with in-office days based in our corporate office in Atlanta (Sandy Springs, GA).
Reporting to the DevOps Manager, the DBA will be responsible for the administration, performance, reliability, and security of SQL Server databases deployed in AWS and on-premises environments. They ensure database systems are properly maintained, optimized, and aligned with business and technical requirements, supporting software development teams with performance tuning, troubleshooting, and best practices for database operations.
Key responsibilities
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances in AWS environments.
- Monitor database health, troubleshoot performance issues, and implement optimization strategies to improve efficiency and reliability.
- Work closely with software development teams to optimize stored procedures, indexes, and queries, ensuring high performance in large OLTP environments.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts for database administration, backup, and maintenance tasks.
- Ensure high availability and disaster recovery readiness by managing backups, replication, clustering, Always On availability groups, and failover processes where used.
- Conduct root cause analysis and resolution for database-related incidents, minimizing downtime and improving reliability.
- Implement and maintain security best practices, ensuring compliance with data protection policies, access controls, and audit requirements.
- Manage database migrations, version upgrades, and schema changes with minimal disruption to production environments.
- Support vendor-unmanaged services, ensuring seamless integration and reliability.
- Coordinate with security teams for vulnerability management, security assessments, and remediation of identified risks.
- Produce well-documented database architecture diagrams, procedures, and guidelines for operational efficiency.
- Be available for out-of-hours support in case of critical incidents or planned maintenance.
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of database best practices and knowledge sharing.

Experience required.
- 3+ years of experience in SQL Server database administration.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Strong experience in SQL Server versions 2012 - 2019 (and later), including installation, configuration, and administration.
- Deep knowledge of backup and recovery strategies and disaster recovery solutions.
- Expertise in performance tuning, query optimization, indexing strategies, and troubleshooting bottlenecks.
- Operational experience in AWS database services and cloud-based deployments.
- Experience with automation and scripting for database administration tasks using PowerShell, T-SQL, or other scripting languages.
- Proficiency in managing security configurations, access controls, encryption, and compliance with industry standards.
- Experience in database patch management and version upgrades.
- Strong understanding of database monitoring tools and proactive alerting strategies.
Experience desired
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform for database provisioning.
- Experience with monitoring tools such as Datadog, CloudWatch, and Grafana.
- Working knowledge of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Reporting Services (SSRS).
- Understanding of networking principles, including DNS, Firewalls, and Certificates as they relate to database connectivity.
- Exposure to ISO-certified environments and compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with security tools such as Snyk and TFSec for database security best practices.
- Hands-on experience with DevOps principles and CI/CD pipeline integration for database management.
