POSITION PURPOSE
This position will serve as a subject matter expert in Data Science for the Montpelier Continuous Improvement group. The incumbent will provide consulting and coaching to diverse employees on how to use Data Science to identify and solve problems in their work and will also perform some of the coding and analysis work needed to implement such solutions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identify valuable data sources and automate collection processes
- Undertake preprocessing of structured and unstructured data
- Analyze large amounts of information to discover trends and patterns
- Build predictive models and machine-learning algorithms
- Present information using data visualization techniques
- Propose solutions and strategies to business challenges
- Collaborate with Production, Technical Services, and personnel in other areas
QUALIFICATIONS
Competencies and Experience
Required:
- Knowledge of R, SQL and/or Python
- Some experience using business intelligence tools such as Tableau
- Understanding of machine-learning and operations research
- Analytical mind and business acumen
- Strong math skills
- Problem-solving aptitude
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
Preferred:
- Proven experience as a Data Scientist or Data Analyst
- Experience in data mining
- Experience in modelling
- Familiarity with IBA systems
- Familiarity with Java or C++
- Understanding of AI/ML frameworks such as Tensorflow, Sagemaker, Spark MLIB, etc.
- Experience in the steel industry or other process industries
Education
Required:
- BSc/BA in Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant field
- Some coursework in statistics
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Metallurgy, Materials or related field
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS
- There are no direct reports to this position. There are numerous interfaces throughout the organization during the implementation of these duties
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates in both the office and industrial environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment. This role is partially sedentary (average of 5 hours per day).
This position will often require work in the industrial environment with exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards.
The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

- Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
- Vision at near, mid, and far range
- Peripheral vision and depth perception
The employee will occasionally be required to:
- Drive a pickup truck/automobile or travel by airplane

- Twist at waist level, reach above shoulder level, reach at and/or below waist level
- Handle, grip, hold, and grasp with both hands together or separately

The employee will be required to sit, stand, and/or walk as follows:
- Sitting 0-8 hours at a time; average 5 hours a day
- Standing 0-8 hours at a time; average 2 hours a day
- Walking 0-8 hours at a time; average 1 hours a day
- Alternate sitting and standing as needed
The employee will be required to use the following machines or tools:
- Desktop computer
- Control software
The employee will work in the following conditions:
- Indoors
- In extreme heat and extreme cold
- In wet and humid conditions
- Amid fumes, dust, dirt, and smoke
- In confined areas and high places
- Around equipment in motion
- Amid noise
- Amid mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards
- Around industrial magnets
- While wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazards
POSITION TYPE – WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Position is full time, exempt
- Position works day shift, Monday through Friday – additional overtime, nights or weekend work as needed
- Position is onsite at SSAB Iowa location
- Travel up to 10% of time (driving or by airplane) in the field or at other SSAB locations
