DSG is seeking a Plumbing & HVAC Counter Sales Associate in our Winona, MN location. In this full time, hourly position, work is typically performed between the hours of 7:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, but may vary on occasion according to business needs. As a Counter Sales Associate, you will assist customers at the City Desk with order placement and fulfillment, as well as assisting in all aspects of warehouse duties, including deliveries

The ideal candidate must be comfortable spending approximately 50% of their time at the Counter and 50% of their time in the warehouse and/or on deliveries.

A Typical Day in the Life of a Plumbing & HVAC Counter Sales Associate:


  • Counter Sales
    • Serve as the primary facilitator for customer orders made at the City Desk
    • Assist customers in a professional manner with product inquiries
    • Write orders accurately and in a timely manner
    • Generate customer quotations and follow up as necessary
    • Provide trouble-shooting and technical support
    • Work with other sales team members to resolve customer service issues
    • Restock the counter area according to product brand and location
    • Monitor product inventory and cull damaged product 
    • Maintain a clean and appealing counter display area
    • Identify and encourage the sale of additional products as applicable
  • Warehouse 
    • Accurately pulls material from location to fill each order.
    • Pack, label, and place filled orders in proper location for delivery.
    • Regular operation of warehouse equipment (forklift, picker, turret, etc., training/certification provided).
    • Ensures a clean, safe working environment: sweeps and mops floors, cleans and dusts shelves, sorts and dumps trash in appropriate bins.
    • Adheres to all safety protocols and procedures at all times.
    • Uses computer and/or RF gun to check on status, availability, and location of product.
    • Maintains proficiency in computerized systems and other technologies as required.
    • Notifies Branch Manager about shortages or overages in inventory.
    • Work with fellow warehouse associates to ensure efficient workflow and timely order fulfillment.
    • Loads delivery trucks as needed.
    • Handle calls for warehouse when needed.
    • Assist in Receiving as workload permits.
  • Deliveries
    • Load delivery truck in a safe manner, according to company policy
    • Inspect truck & trailer according to company policy and DOT standards, to ensure it is in good workingorder
    • Communicate any vehicle safety issues you have immediately to your supervisor
    • Communicate with customers regarding delivery dates & times
    • Work with warehouse associates to communicate how product should be loaded
    • Drives to various customer locations, typically within 150 miles of branch location. Unloads materials asper customer instruction specific to the order or standing instructions to customer's place of business orwarehouse facility
    • Stay compliant with DOT/FMCSA and OSHA regulations including completion of training activities asrequired in DSG policy and/or by regulatory authorities.
    • Adhere to DSG’s safety policy and vehicle safety program.
    • Keep truck clean inside and out and reports any maintenance issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned

A Successful Plumbing & HVAC Counter Sales Associate Typically Has: 

  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record, with a current DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one.
  • Product and technical knowledge normally acquired in two or more years of college or technical school OR 3-5 years field experience in the residential/commercial applications of plumbing & HVAC products.
  • Safety training on material handling and forklift driving.
  • Excellent relationship building skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, customer service and communication skills across a variety of settings (in-person, phone, and email).
  • Strong attention to detail, paired with the ability to multi-task.
  • A knack for active listening to determine customer needs.
  • Superior problem solving, project management, and analytical skills.
  • A high proficiency with computers – experience in Eclipse or other ERP systems preferred.
  • The ability to plan, prioritize and organize work effectively under pressure and time constraints. 
  • The ability to work as part of a team. 
  • Commitment to workplace safety. 
  • Physical ability to lift, push, pull or move items weighing 70-325lbs. with the aid of mechanical deviceor another person.
