Job Summary:

The Costing Engineer reports directly to the Vice President of Components and provides quick and accurate estimates for fabricated sheet metal and high-level assemblies. Will also provide technical assistance to Sales, Engineering, Operations and Purchasing in analyzing customer projects to provide timely and accurate quotes


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The position provides accurate and timely cost estimates for fabricated sheet metal products and complex high-level assemblies based on blueprints and/or solid engineering models and specifications provided by the customer in a fast-paced environment. This includes working closely with Supply Chain to coordinate getting all prints/specs and quantities to quote in a clean package for sourcing. High level assemblies include sheet metal fabrications, purchased content, powder coating, mechanical assembly and outside services
  • Work closely with Sales personnel and engineering to understand the scope of the project.
  • Interact with the estimating team and sales staff to prioritize projects and make quote/no quote decisions
  • Work closely with MPE suppliers and MPE Supply Chain team to provide cost of purchase parts. 
  • Use manufacturing and engineering departments as a resource to assist with unique assemblies
  • Recommend alternative processes based on part characteristics/volume
  • Be able to work unsupervised when needed and work fast while maintaining accuracy and is not easily distracted
  • Must be able to decide make vs. buy decisions as well as come up with the most effective way to make product while keeping a strong margin profile for the business
  • Position requires attention to detail and strong knowledge of industry standard quality requirements
  • Candidate must be open-minded and open to new ideas and technology
     
     

Experience and Education 

  • Associate’s degree in mechanical or industrial engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years estimating experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with SolidWorks
  • Blueprint reading and GD&T knowledge
  • Good working experience of laser cutting, punching, brake press forming, mechanical fastening, welding, powser coating and electro-mechanical assembly
  • Ability to work with internal and external resources and work under quick customer deadlines while being detail-oriented
  • Previous metal fabrication shop experience
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic trigonometry
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical information in mathematical form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
