Job description summary:

Our organization is seeking a highly skilled cost accountant. The primary role of this position will support new product development processes including, but not limited to, cost estimating and developing other product development project financial information. The cost accountant is responsible for performing accounting functions in support of month end close, accurate valuation of products, inventory, and cost of goods sold as workload allows. This position requires a quick learner with high levels of attention to detail, collaboration, teamwork, and flexibility in a fast-paced environment. There is a critical technical focus on validating product structures and manufacturing steps, creating estimates, preparing cost change analyses, and communicating the potential or realized financial impact.

 

 

Essential duties & responsibilities:

  • Support new product initiatives by developing product cost estimating tools, pro forma profitability
  • Track variance and updates project workbook with realized values
  • Collaborate with internal departments to meet financial product and project goals
  • Analyze changes in product design, raw materials, manufacturing methods, and outside manufacturing services to determine the financial impact on product costs
  • Assist in maintaining the standard cost system including, but not limited to, setting and updating part costs, auditing product structures, manufacturing methods and costs for accuracy, analyzing the effects of cost changes on materials and work center updates, assisting in recommending rate changes and proposed cost roll dates, and performing various cost rolls and validating accuracy
  • Plan and schedule assigned activities to meet deadlines and due dates
  • Adhere to IFRS guidelines
  • Support monthly close processes
  • Conduct various analyses outside of new product development including, but not limited to, comparing standard manufacturing and procurement costs to actual costs, reviewing and tracking inventory, and work order variances
  • Perform a variety of clerical and technical duties as allowed, such as assisting in the automation of office functions, supporting physical inventory preparations and activities, supporting the surcharge database, and verifying cost savings
  • Recommend improvements in internal cost accounting procedures and controls
  • Other duties as required

 

Experience and skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field  
  • Minimum one (1) to three (3) years manufacturing experience or equivalent
  • CMA certification preferred
  • Knowledge or experience in new product development and/or cost estimating is a plus
  • Knowledge of sound accounting principles, their laws, and internal controls
  • Strong work ethic, self-management, research, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities with flexibility to effectively adapt to changing conditions and job assignments
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to challenge status quo professionally and respectfully within the organization
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications is required, must be strong in Excel
  • Capable of creating change across functional and departmental boundaries
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire to succeed
  • Able to make recommendations and effectively participate in the implementation of company policies and procedures
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Effectively able to present information in one-on-one and small group situations
