Job Overview:

About Pratt Miller, an Oshkosh company

Pratt Miller is a product development company in motorsports, defense, and mobility industries providing clients with product engineering and low-volume production solutions. Our range of research & development, engineering, prototype manufacturing, test & validation, and low-rate production capability help our customers bring their high-quality products to market faster.

The Core Simulation Engineer develops, validates, and deploys high-fidelity, numerically efficient multibody vehicle models and simulation tools to support vehicle performance analysis and development across a range of environments. The primary simulation capabilities include:

  • Dymola-based vehicle and subsystem modeling libraries for desktop, XiL, and real-time applications
  • Lap time simulation (LTS) tools
  • Simulation workflows for tool chain integration
  • Vehicle dynamics analysis processed and tools

This role also leads correlation and continuous improvement efforts, contributes to simulation infrastructure, and collaborates cross-functionally while providing expertise to internal teams and customers.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in vehicle dynamics and multibody simulation, with hands-on experience in model development, correlation, and simulation toolchains for high-performance vehicles. They combine solid programming and analytical skills with a self-driven, detail-oriented, and collaborative approach to solving complex engineering problems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain numerically efficient multibody models of vehicles, subsystems, and tires in Dymola/Modelica to enable high-quality simulation and analysis
  • Adapt and optimize simulation models for multiple environments, including desktop, real-time, XiL (MiL/SiL/HiL), and Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) applications
  • Design, enhance, and support simulation workflows, model architectures, and analysis utilities, ensuring seamless integration within the broader Pratt Miller vehicle performance ecosystem
  • Develop and advance lap time simulation tools, methodologies, and workflows with a focus on accuracy, robustness, and computational efficiency
  • Lead correlation activities by comparing simulation results to track and rig test data, continuously improving model fidelity and predictive capability
  • Diagnose and resolve model performance, numerical stability, and correlation issues; communicate gaps and improvement opportunities to the core development team
  • Execute simulation studies to support development efforts, synthesizing results into clear, concise technical reports and recommendations
  • Maintain model quality through rigorous documentation, version control, and validation practices
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in vehicle dynamics and simulation, providing technical guidance to engineers and customers
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with vehicle dynamics, controls, software, and test teams to align simulation capabilities with broader program objectives
  • Partner with internal programs and external customers to deploy, apply, and support Pratt Miller simulation products and capabilities

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, tasks relating to the following areas will be assigned as required:

  • Attendance at Pratt & Miller meetings
  • Education / training
  • Provide feedback on product needs and processes
  • Support Pratt Miller initiatives, marketing events, and general development as necessary

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Desired Education

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
  • At least 3 years professional or academic experience in automotive engineering and simulation (motorsports preferred)
  • Strong background in vehicle dynamics

Desired Specialized Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong foundation in vehicle dynamics, multibody dynamics, rigid-body mechanics, tire modeling, and applied mathematics for dynamic systems
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining multibody vehicle models for motorsports or high-performance applications
  • Experience with Dymola/Modelica or similar multibody simulation environments
  • Experience developing lap time simulation tools and associated workflows
  • Experience with model correlation and validation using track, rig, and test data
  • Ability to develop accurate, numerically efficient models for desktop, real-time, XiL, and DiL applications
  • Experience building and improving simulation toolchains, model frameworks, and analysis utilities
  • Familiarity with tire modeling methods and parameterization approaches (e.g., Pacejka or similar)
  • Background in classical controls; exposure to optimal control methods is a plus
  • Experience using full-vehicle simulation in high-performance vehicle development
  • Programming proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C++, C#, or similar languages for simulation and tool development
  • Experience with FMI standards and FMU-based model exchange and co-simulation workflows
  • Familiarity with structured software development practices, including version control, testing, and maintainable code development
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to operate independently and drive work forward with minimal direction
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Strong work ethic and collaborative, team-oriented mindset

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Stress may occur periodically
  • Long hours may be required at times
  • Limited amounts of travel may be required
  • Work environment can vary between group and individual assignments and tasks

Pay Range:

$79,300.00 - $126,900.00

The above pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target pay for the position across all U.S. locations. Within this range, individual pay is determined by various factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate's experience, education and skills, as well as the equity of pay among team members in similar positions. Beyond offering a competitive total rewards package, we prioritize a people-first culture and offer various opportunities to support team member growth and success.
