Controls Technician

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Required to read and perform programming changes to include wiring, ladder logic, structured text, function blocks, operator interface and computer networking.
  2. Often required to work on a computer for long hours while developing or modifying programs on the equipment.
  3. Required to work with multiple programing software including PanelMate, Visual Logic Controller, ControlLogix, RSViewME, RSView32, PicPro, and other various pieces of software.
  4. Required knowledge in Windows operating systems to configure and setup networks, communication ports, and data file management systems.
  5. Works closely with engineering on the development or modifications to the equipment involving electrical and control system.
  6. Required to read blueprints in order to troubleshoot, repair, or modify equipment wiring.
  7. Required to set up and operate various types of production machinery and equipment after they have performed a modification prior to approving production usage to ensure superior operating and safe conditions after performing changes to equipment.
  8. Assisting maintenance on troubleshooting efforts on lasers, annealers, saws, and other automated equipment.
  9. Working with voltages up to and including 600 volts DC and 480 volts AC.
  10. Uses a variety of power and hand tools such as, but not limited to, drills, saws, wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers and grease guns while performing work on machinery and equipment.
  11. Uses machine tool equipment such as lathe, surface grinder, and milling machine.
  12. Uses electrical MIG welder, arc welder, grinder, and cutting torch.
  13. Operates fork truck whenever necessary.
  14. Operates aerial lift & scissor lift when required to performed work at elevated heights. When working at heights is required the average height is twenty feet. The maximum height that a Control Technician will work at is forty feet.
  15. Required to work from verbal or written instructions.
  16. Required to be a First Responder to any emergency, either equipment or personnel, and are trained in CPR and First Aid.
  17. Often required to crawl into, under, or on top of equipment and machinery, including Heat Treat Furnaces while following OSHA Confined Space Regulations.
  18. Often required to climb ladders to make changes, inspect, or install equipment or machinery.
  19. Required to inspect, move, and install new or existing equipment or machinery.
  20. Works on major projects such as complete equipment and machinery rebuilds, design alterations or modification of existing equipment or machinery.
  21. Communicates with production operators to obtain information on nature of equipment failure in order to trouble shoot problems, and examine machinery or mechanical equipment to identify reason for malfunction.
  22. Communicates with production on changes to be made to develop proper functionality of the operator interface on the equipment.
  23. Utilizes electrical meters to identify voltages, wires, and while troubleshooting.
  24. Utilizes hand tools to access, install, or remove components to modify equipment.
  25. Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, repairs and adjusts electrical fixtures, apparatus, equipment, machinery, and wiring.  Examples of equipment include, but are not limited to, motors, welding equipment, lighting fixtures, circuit breakers, transformers, programmable logic controls.
  26. Installs, repairs, and calibrates electrical and electronic recording devices, and regulating control instruments.
  27. Measures, cuts, threads, bends and installs electrical conduit.  Pulls wiring through conduit.  Splices wires.  Connects wiring to fixtures and power equipment.  Installs grounding leads.  Installs and monitors performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments or replacement.
  28. Control Technician will work closely with the Maintenance Department when installing, reconfiguring, or removing equipment or machinery.
  29. Responsible for the development of initial training on new programing, operator interface, or machine operation to the maintenance department and production SBMs.
  30. May be required to “fill-in” for other positions when there is a need.
  31. Performs other duties as assigned.
  32. Must be self-motivated to take initiative after receiving assignments.

Typical Physical Demands:

  1. Must be able to work a minimum of 12 hours per day on a regular basis.  May require additional hours of work, as required. 
  1. Requires full range of body motion to include: lifting, bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, stooping, and squatting.
  • Position requires frequent walking and/or standing on concrete floor while wearing steel-toed shoes.  May walk up to two (2) miles per shift while performing essential duties.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • May require unassisted lifting of a variety of objects from various positions, which range in weight from 5 to 50 pounds with an average weight of 34-37 pounds.
  • Utilizes a variety of hand positions such as turning and twisting.
  • Since the manufacturing plant operates around-the-clock, may often work late shifts and may be called at any hour to deal with emergencies.  This could mean going to the plant to resolve the problem, regardless of the hour, and staying until the situation is under control.
  • Dealing with production workers as well as supervisors when working under the pressure of production deadlines or emergency situations can be stressful.
  • The job is fast paced and the ability to deal with stress is essential.
