JOB SUMMARY (the purpose and general nature of the job): 

 The Controls Engineer II contributes to the development and enhancement of electrical control systems for Stolle Machinery’s existing and future product lines. This role operates under the supervision of senior engineers, managers, or directors, but also requires the ability to work independently with moderate guidance.

 The Controls Engineer II may be assigned as the technical lead on specific projects based on the complexity of the work and the individual's experience. Success in this position requires strong analytical skills, a degree of creativity, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES: None

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES include the following:  

 Plan and organize daily and weekly workload to ensure timely delivery of assigned tasks and alignment with long-term strategic objectives.

  • Design new electrical control systems and improve existing systems to support both new product development and legacy product enhancements.
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, safety circuits, and supporting manufacturing drawings using EPLAN and/or 2D CAD tools.
  • Prepare and manage accurate Bills of Material (BOMs) for electrical systems and assemblies.
  • Develop, test, and maintain PLC programs to support machine functionality and performance.
  • Support machinery testing and iterative development throughout the product lifecycle, including validation and verification activities.
  • Lead project-specific initiatives, including on-site commissioning and testing at Stolle facilities and customer locations (domestic and international).
  • Investigate customer-reported quality issues, implement corrective actions, and document resolutions in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide innovative, practical, and effective design solutions to complex engineering challenges.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions from management and senior engineers with minimal supervision.
  • Document workflows, version control, and design decisions clearly, with the ability to present status or outcomes to management on short notice.
  • Review the work of junior engineers or subcontractors and provide constructive, professional feedback.
  • Write and execute test plans, analyze data, and draw sound engineering conclusions based on results.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including customers, in a clear, professional, and timely manner.

 KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Minimal requirements for education, knowledge and experience:

 Proven experience troubleshooting process control systems, electrical equipment, PLC programs, HMI applications, sensors, valves, motors, drives, and VFD motion control systems.

  • Extensive experience designing Allen-Bradley-based control systems; familiarity with Siemens, Omron, and B&R systems is a plus.
  • Proficient in programming Allen-Bradley PLCs; Siemens, Omron & B&R experience beneficial.
  • Strong background in electrical control panel design and integration.
  • Practical experience with IO-Link technology, safety PLCs, networking technologies, VFDs, and HMIs.
  • Working knowledge of safe design principles in accordance with IEC, ISO, OSHA, UL, and NFPA standards.
  • Ability to configure and manage industrial communication networks (e.g., EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, OPC-UA, IO-Link).
  • Skilled in electrical design software, with proficiency in EPLAN (preferred) and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Proficient in using electrical test equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, and data acquisition sensors (e.g., temperature, strain, position, current).
  • Basic mechanical aptitude, particularly in pneumatics, hydraulics, and motion systems.
  • Experience developing and implementing SCADA systems using platforms such as Ignition and Wonderware / AVEVA.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA), with a solid understanding of engineering impact on manufacturing cost and lead time.
  • Experience working with ERP systems (IFS preferred) and PDM/PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and advanced Excel-based data analysis.
  • Excellent technical writing skills; experience in creating technical documentation and user manuals.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally (up to 40%); must be able to obtain and maintain a valid passport.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field (Controls Engineering, Software Engineering, automation, controls).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience designing and implementing automation solutions in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in product development environment.
  • Proven track record of sound engineering design.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in the following environment:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. (office environment).
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times (plant floor environment).
