Title: Controls Engineer

SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to provide technical support and strategic improvement to the manufacturing and maintenance departments. This position will develop and maintain plant floor automated data collect systems, analyze data for loss prevention and provide expertise and direction for energy efficiency. This position will sustain the Mission and Motto and Food Safety and Quality Statement of the Mennel Milling Company. 

 

PRIMARY WORK SHIFT: Monday through Friday 7:30AM – 5PM. Will vary, depending on workload. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow all food and personal safety rules and regulations in respect to GMP’s, OSHA, HACCP, the Global Food Safety Initiative, the US FDA Food Safety Modernization Act as stated in the FS&Q Statement, and sanitation guidelines as set forth by the company as listed in Corporate Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) and attend all required training sessions. Maintain the department/facility in an everyday audit ready condition.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems.
  • Provide both formal and informal training to maintenance and operations personnel.
  • Set strategic direction with respect to electrical infrastructure and automation systems.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data to find losses, while implementing methods to prevent losses.
  • Use control systems to ensure product quality and safety.
  • Maintain plant floor automation servers.
  • Write logic and maintain objects in Wonderware System Platform.
  • Design and alter Wonderware InTouch and Panelview HMI’s.
  • Troubleshoot using PLC logic.
  • Write new PLC logic to correct or alter the operation of equipment as needed.
  • Configure automation equipment such as PLC’s, VFD’s, HMI’s, Servo’s, etc.
  • Scope, write and execute electrical and automation projects (capital or otherwise)
  • Scope electrical and automation portion of other projects (capital or otherwise); assist in execution.
  • Own electrical infrastructure maintenance (i.e. transformers and switchgear).
  • Troubleshoot and correct plant floor network problems.
  • Own, maintain, and champion the plant electrical safety program; provide electrical safety training as needed.
  • Read and update electrical drawings as needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory duties.


QUALIFICATIONS:   

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in engineering preferred; or equivalent work experience in the electrical and automation field.
  • Minimum two years experience to plan, lead, and execute strategic initiatives in a complex.
  • Minimum two years experience to configure and program PLC’s, HMI’s, Drives, and other electrical devices, specifically those manufactured by Allen-Bradley/Rockwell preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience to configure and program SCADA systems, specifically Wonderware Archestra IDE, InTouch, MES, and Historian.
  • Knowledge of ACP ThinManager as well as how to setup and manage thin clients throughout the shop preferred.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Power Distribution.
  • Knowledge of communication networks utilized for automation systems; specifically, Ethernet, Remote-IO, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Data Highway, and Profibus.
  • Basic Knowledge of pneumatics and mechanical systems.
  • Strong Skills in Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Must have exceptional time management and organizational skills.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, procedures, and plans. Ability to write, complete checklists and other basic documentation and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information or data in one-on-one and small group situations to co-workers, supervisors, and managers.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Must use solid judgment when making decisions. Must have ability to quickly recognize and plan for changing work duties and events.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to conditions that are typical to a fast- paced manufacturing environment, including: moving equipment and machinery, dusty, hot/humid, and cold conditions; employee must be willing to work in all weather conditions, at heights, and in the presence of airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment usually requires the use of hearing protection. Work involves exposure to common wheat allergens.
